One person has died and at least 16 others were injured after a van drove into a crowd near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day celebrations yesterday, July 25th.
The incident took place in Tiergarten park near the Pride parade route, prompting police to cancel the remainder of the event and an associated concert at the Brandenburg Gate, Associated Press reports. Authorities said several of those injured sustained life-threatening injuries.
Police have identified a suspect who remains at large and has ties to the city’s “Islamist scene,” according to DW. More than 2,200 officers had been deployed across the city for the annual event, one of Europe’s largest Pride celebrations, which attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees each year.
Berlin mayor Kai Wegner described the incident as “an attack on our city, on our freedom and on our values”, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the violence and said authorities would do everything possible to identify those responsible.
