After a serious health scare earlier this year, Queen Margrethe is on vacation in the south of France. The former Danish queen, 86, who abdicated in 2024, typically spends her summers at Château de Cayx. The castle, located near the city of Cahors in the south of France, was purchased by Queen Margrethe and her husband Prince Henrik in 1974. It is a private residence of the Queen and located near where her late husband grew up.
As described by the royal family, “Through the years, Château de Cayx has been the Royal Family’s base in France. In Prince Henrik’s lifetime, The Queen and Prince Henrik spent several weeks at the French vineyard château every summer, and Her Majesty has continued this tradition since Prince Henrik’s death. Likewise, from when they were quite small, The Crown Prince [now King Frederik] and Prince Joachim have had a close connection with Château de Cayx, and this connection they have carried into their own families.”

Queen Margrethe was spotted in a market in Cahors, near her French castle home. She used a cane as a mobility aid, and was joined by Annette de Scheel, her lady-in-waiting, along with men who looked to be members of her security team.

It’s a rare public outing for Margrethe, who was hospitalized in May for heart health concerns and again a few weeks later for a blood clot in her hip. Her first official appearance following her hospitalization came in mid-June, when she attended a literary prize named for her late husband at Fredensborg Palace in Copenhagen.
