They recently released their 6th album titled «For Love of Grace & the Hearafter» and are currently on tour playing the entire new album live. The band came on stage in front of the small crowd at Sirkus. Elias Bender Rønnenfelt followed few seconds after his bandmates and holding 2 bouquets of sunflowers and started to sing «Ember», the opening track of the album. Once the song over, the flowery props ended up in the crowd. The rather static band carried on with the new material. The singer is an interesting character to watch on stage. He projects a ‘’wannabe cool’’ look, but has a ‘’I don’t give fuck’’ attitude. Confusing… There wasn’t a lot of interaction with the crowd throughout the show other than a simple ‘’Takk’’ every 2-3 songs. Many curious, started to leave after 4-5 song; probably wanting to secure a good spot for Lily Allen. The rest of the show remained pretty much the same. Were they another victim of the wrong slot time on the wrong day? Perhaps.
Musically, Iceage is worth listening to. The new album is really good and deserves to be heard especially if you like The Strokes, Idles or Shame. But on the Sirkus stage, they didn’t deliver anything memorable.
Important note: For band who broke through in 2011, who has a lot of stage experience and greatly praised by the Guardian and Pitchfork, my expectations were high, maybe too high. If you are looking for something new to listen to, give it a try. It’s pretty good. Although live, there isn’t much to see here. 2.5/6
