As sea ice disappears from the coast of East Greenland, giant whales are moving in to take over previously inaccessible waters. As per a report published in the BBC, a decade-long study revealed that humpback, minke, and fin whales were flocking to these ice-free seas every summer for massive feeding sessions. Naturally, the dense ice kept these marine mammals locked out of the region, but now the rising ocean temperatures driven by climate change have melted the barrier, allowing the animals to quickly adapt to new territory. Researchers describe the transformation as a major “ecological regime shift,” turning the subarctic waters into a seasonal haven for hungry giants.Surge in number of whalesThe speed of this shift has been remarkable. Ship-based surveys conducted along the East Greenland coast didn’t spot a single humpback whale until 2006. Just one year later, observers logged seven humpbacks. As per the study in 2024, it was noted that the number surged to 150 sightings, and to map this expansion, scientists from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources conducted systematic aerial surveys during the summers of 2015 and 2024. They paired that visual data with tracking paths from 15 satellite-tagged whales and observational accounts from local Inuit hunters. Warmer sea temperatures have brought in new fish populations, creating an abundance of food. Scientists estimate that these three baleen whale species consume at least 800,000 tonnes of fish and krill during a single summer feeding season.
