The U.S. administration’s main interest in Greenland is focused on national security, not on extracting rare earth metals or energy resources on the island.
On February 17, during a Paris conference organized by the French Institute of International Relations, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that Washington is prioritizing security over purely economic interests regarding Greenland.
According to sources, Trump has long sought to establish influence in the region, and with a return to the White House the administration has considered exploiting untapped deposits in the region.
However, according to Wright, these actions have a secondary aim – expanding economic opportunities for Greenlanders and strengthening the U.S. military presence on the island.

Rare earth metals have become one of the key elements of U.S. geopolitics, as Washington seeks to reduce dependence on China’s dominance in the supply of critical minerals. As part of its diversification policy, the United States is considering deals for the exploration and supply of minerals from the region.
Currently, the administration is focusing not only on mining but also on the further processing of rare earth metals, which they see as the main obstacle to creating reliable alternative supply chains.
