Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has suffered an early setback in his tenure with Swedish side AIK Fotboll.

Riveiro took over at the Swedish club almost six months after being dismissed by Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC following a run of poor performances and declining results.

The Spanish mentor spent just three months at the Red Devils, overseeing just seven games before being shown the exit door.

Despite a brief and challenging spell at the 12‑time CAF Champions League winners, his reputation remained intact, and he soon earned another opportunity in Europe.

The 48-year-old tactician’s strong track record with Pirates, where he won five domestic trophies, likely helped maintain confidence in his abilities despite his exit from Ahly.

However, Riveiro’s start at AIK has been difficult, with his side losing 2-0 to Västerås SK Fotboll in the Swedish Cup’s Group G encounter on Sunday evening

The defeat at home leaves AIK bottom of the group with zero points, but Riveiro and his squad will be targeting their first win when they face IK Oddevold next Saturday.

Moreover, in an unofficial pre-season friendly, the Vigo-born coach’s side also suffered a 4-1 defeat to Norwegian outfit Viking FK.

Despite the rough start, Riveiro’s tactical acumen and experience could help him turn things around ahead of the new Allsvenskan season, which starts in April.
