Lithuania, a land encapsulated by history and natural wonders, is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be explored. From the captivating and historic sand dunes in the Croatian Spit to the breathtaking hot air balloon rides, this Baltic country offers an array of thrilling experiences that will leave you awe-inspired. Here are the must see and do things in Lithuania.
Most Lithuanaians speak three languages, so you’ll easily be able to engage with people there. Lithuanians generally speak Lithuanian (duh!), Russian (since they were occupied by the Soviets for decades) and English.

What’s nice about Lithuania is that it is big enough to offer diverse options, but not so large you’d need a plane to get around. Of course, you can take a bus or train to get around. But I recommend hiring a guide and a driver. We had a fabulous time with our guide, Mili Explores who is available for both large and small groups (we were just 2 people). She can find a driver for the tour as well.
Stay: Hotel Pacai

Hotel Pacai Vilnius
(Malika Bowling)
After a long flight and overnight travel, you’ll want to relax and freshen up and the Hotel Pacai is the perfect place to do that. Located in Old Town Vilnius, it is centrally located for walking to many restaurants and sites. Even though it is in the heart of everything it is quiet enough that your morning slumber won’t be interrupted. Plus, the staff interaction was some of the kindest I’ve ever had. The morning breakfast buffet at the hotel is upscale with the perfect feast to begin each day. I only wish we had had time to enjoy the spa!
Eat – Proteviai Restaurant

(Malika Bowling)
There’s no bad meal to be had in Lithuania, but Vilnius is experiencing a robust dining scene right now, and even if you aren’t a foodie, per se, you will want to take advantage of the luscious dining options available. Dinner at Protėviai, an upscale steakhouse on our first night was phenomenal. Our tuna tartare and chicken skewers were a diving start to the steak that followed.
Prison Tour of Lukiškės Prison

Lukiškės Prison Lithuania
(Malika Bowling)
It sounds unusual that a prison tour is a must do in any country but this Lithuanian prison is so unique and like no other. It only ceased operations in 2019. After touring the prison and seeing the horrendous conditions of the cells and how out of date it was, it is hard to believe it was only a handful of years ago there were prisoners there. This was once a notorious Soviet-era penitentiary, and the tour offers a spine-chilling glimpse into Lithuania’s dark past.

During the tour, you’ll be able to hear the tales of some of the political prisoners housed here, the take of someone who tried to escape and see the spot that was “Siberia” in Season 4 of Stranger Things. Yep, the prison is used in many films. The outdoor spot is even a place for outdoor concerts and they even have a pop up beer truck to quench your thirst after the tour.
Hot Air Balloon ride over Vilnius

Hot Air Ballon Ride Vilnius
(Malika Bowling)
If a hot air balloon ride is on your bucket list of things to do in this lifetime, there’s no better place to do it than in Lithuania. The way it works is that all balloons about 6 – 8 depart from the same park around the same time. Teams set them up and they all lift off within about 10 minutes. You will be packed in quite tightly (there were about a dozen of us in one basket). You’ll soon forget about the tight quarters after you are soaring high in the air.
From start to finish the ride takes about 3 hours. It was wonderfully planned, as you can imagine it isn’t certain where you’ll land, but thanks to their communication, our ride was in the field to pick us up within minutes. A quick champagne toast and certificate to commemorate our experience and we were on our way to a late dinner. As you gently float above the rolling hills and picturesque landscapes, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views that will leave you in awe. The magical colors of the sky will create a mesmerizing backdrop for your adventure.
Boat ride around Trakai Castle

Trakai castle visit and boat ride
(Malika Bowling)
Most trips will have you visit Trakai Castle when you are leaving Vilnius on to Kaunus. The Gothic architecture prevalent in the castle design is best taken in on a boat ride around Lake Galve. You can go inside but our tour guide recommended we enjoy the views from out boat ride, which can be arranged for somewhere between 5 and 10 Euros per person.
Curonian Spit and sand dunes

Curonian Spit Sand Dunes
(Malika Bowling)
Nestled along the Baltic Sea, Lithuania’s Curonian Spit is a geographical wonder that has captivated the hearts of travelers and historians for centuries. In a land where history merges seamlessly with nature.
The Curonian Spit’s history dates back thousands of years. It was formed by a complex interplay of geological and environmental processes. The Spit is essentially a long, narrow sand dune peninsula, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The process of its formation is ongoing, as sand deposits and wind patterns continually shape and reshape the landscape. Surprisingly, over the centuries, there are three difference villages that have been buried beneath the sand dunes as they have shifted
Amber Museum – Museum for people who don’t love museums

Amber Museum Lithuania
(Malika Bowling)
From the time you get to Lithuania, you’ll hear the term “Lithuanian Gold” in reference to Amber. Lithuanians revere Amber in the way many other countries think of gold, so it makes sense that there’s a museum dedicated to it.
Don’t mistake this for an average boring museum. There are plenty of interactive displays divided into sections that correspond with short videos that explain where amber came from. This is an incredibly well put together museum and newly opened.

Amber Museum Lithuania
(Malika Bowling)
Amber originates from the sap of trees that has been fossilized, but is plentiful in Baltic regions.
In the museum, you’ll be able to see insects “frozen” inside the amber, see how lightweight it is compared to other materials, plus smell and touch pieces of amber. Who knows? You may have a new appreciation for Amber and buy a souvenir of jewelry like I did.

Hill of Witches Lithuania
(Malika Bowling)
Hill of Witches
Your inner child will love visiting the enchanting forest with the Hill of Witches. This outdoor sculpture gallery, built in 1979 contains 80 wooden carved statues and is a mystical place where fairy tales and folklore come to life. Wander through the winding paths adorned with whimsical wooden sculptures depicting characters from Lithuanian mythology. There are plenty of signs to describe each wooden statue as you make your way through this magical forest.
Stop and read or just snap a photo. Expect to spend about 90 minutes here.
Have dinner at Dia in Kaunas

Dia seafood restaurant Lithuania
(Malika Bowling)
Though there are plenty of high end restaurants in the capital city of Lithuania, other cities have terrific dining options too, like Dia. One of the unique salads I had is the Mascarpone salad Iti s made with fruits and berries and of course Mascarpone cheese, then topped with a lime vinaigrette. It is light yet filling. Octopus and Argentine Shrimp are also highlighters. Make sure you have a reservation here. Even on a weekday evening they were fully booked.
Spend a day in Nida

Nida Village
(Malika Bowling)
A springboard to your time at the Curonian Spit and Hill of Witches it Nida. This port town has the cutest homes (many for rent for a short trip) while you get to know this lovely village. While you are there make sure to have dinner at Nidos prieplauka. We enjoyed exceptional cocktails and terrific dishes like Octopus and other seafood dishes here.
Visit the port town Klaipėda

Klapedia in LIthuania

Continuing our journey along the Lithuanian coast, we arrive at the coastal town of Klaipėda. This vibrant city boasts a rich maritime history and a bustling atmosphere. Explore the charming Old Town, where German and Scandinavian influences can be seen in the architecture, and visit the captivating Clock Museum. Don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine, savoring freshly caught seafood delicacies that will tantalize your taste buds.
