Vilnius Green Hydrogen Buses: Production Starts Autumn 2026 - News and Statistics

According to a report from Hydrogen Central, a green hydrogen production facility is under construction in Vilnius. The plant is expected to start generating clean fuel for the city’s public transport system this autumn.

The municipal heat supplier Miesto Gijos is developing the project. Upon completion, the facility will provide hydrogen for the city’s inaugural hydrogen-powered buses, with passenger service anticipated to commence in November. The city’s mayor stated that Vilnius will soon produce and utilize green hydrogen in its public transport network, aiming for a fully environmentally friendly cycle with minimal CO2 emissions.

Initial municipal plans involve deploying ten hydrogen buses, with a longer-term objective of sixteen. A public tender for the buses has been relaunched, with a supplier selection expected in March. Operations are likely to begin with leased buses to facilitate a start this autumn.

Construction of the plant at the site of a local combined heat and power plant is nearing completion. Key equipment such as the electrolyzer, compressor, transformers, and hydrogen dispensers has been delivered and installed. The project contractor confirmed the schedule, with hydrogen production projected to start in July or August.

The plant will employ electrolysis to produce green hydrogen from water and electricity, with an annual capacity of up to 3.45 million cubic metres. The process will also generate excess heat for the city’s district heating network. The CEO of Miesto Gijos described the project as an example of a circular economy, producing hydrogen, capturing residual heat, and supplying clean fuel to buses.

Hydrogen will be stored in four containers and transported to a bus depot in the Justiniskes district, where a publicly accessible refuelling station will be installed. European Union funding provides approximately 5.64 million euros for the project. The mayor noted that the plant would not be economically feasible without this EU support, which covers around 70% of the investment through structural funds.
