Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has explained his thinking in playing Chuba Akpom in a different role during this afternoon’s 2-1 win at Derby County.

The Ajax loanee’s minutes have come either as a No.10 or No.9 so far this season, but he stepped off the bench to play as a left winger at Pride Park.

“We know Chuba can play the different roles across the front,” said McKenna.

“He’s been training there this week and showing some really good things.

“Of course we have some really good players on the left already (Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene) but he’s a little bit different in terms of being more of a second striker.

“He can give another presence in the box, coming in behind the main striker, and it’s a role that I think he can do well for us in as well.

“We have that versatility with a lot of players. Chuba is one of them and I thought he had a good impact today.”
