Berlin Wall segments donated to New College of Florida

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – New College of Florida received 130 tons of the Berlin Wall on Tuesday.

Historians and New College supporters gathered Tuesday morning to see the dedication of 250 slabs of the wall.

Jack Jawitz gifted the pieces to the college. The wall was torn down in 1989, and some of it was saved. Historians hoped to use it in public places so people never forget the divide there once was.

The Future of USF Sarasota-Manatee campus

“I’ve been looking for a partner to help promote the story of the wall, the history of the world through the last 4 to 5 years of a Cold War and I found a New College and they are perfect partner, so I’m making a donation of these sections of the Berlin wall that I own,” Jawitz said.

Jawitz addressed the crowd and talked about the divide the wall made and the importance of its downfall.
