Danish offshore wind installation company Cadeler has installed the first fully commissioned monopile foundation at the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm, which is being developed by Orsted. The project is located 120 kilometres off the Norfolk coast in the UK and has a capacity of 2.9 GW.
Cadeler is responsible for the complete transport and installation operations for a total of 197 offshore monopile foundations at the site. The milestone was achieved after extensive planning and coordination involving both onshore and offshore teams.
The installation of the monopile was carried out by Cadeler’s A-class vessel, the Wind Ally. The Wind Orca handled the placement of secondary steel. The service operation vessel ESVAGT FROUDE, operated by ESVAGT, performed the full commissioning, while Boston Energy completed post-installation work.
Cadeler will use three offshore wind installation vessels, including the newly built Wind Ally, for the Hornsea 3 project to handle the large-scale monopile foundations. Upon completion, the wind farm is expected to supply renewable energy to more than 3.3 million UK homes.
Cadeler project director Bradley Scott described the achievement as representing an important step as the company expands into full-scope foundation transport and installation, emphasising that delivering projects at such a scale requires close collaboration, detailed planning, and strong execution across every phase. He expressed pride in supporting Orsted on Hornsea 3 and gratitude to all teams whose commitment and collaboration contributed to reaching that point safely and successfully.
In September of the previous year, Cadeler signed a contract with Ocean Winds for the transport and installation of offshore wind turbines for the 390 MW BC-Wind farm in the Polish Baltic Sea.
