Vilma Draugelė, a cosmetologist with over fifteen years of experience in the beauty industry, is transitioning from individual practice to business ownership. Her new venture, a small partnership (MB) named “Balta drobė” (White Canvas), is set to open in Vilnius this autumn. The facility will feature three specialized treatment rooms and a team of professionals, marking a significant expansion from her previous solo work.
Draugelė began her career in 2009, initially focusing on classic moisturizing treatments and event makeup. However, her professional interests evolved toward solving complex skin issues. To deepen her expertise, she completed a Bachelor’s degree in cosmetology, allowing her to specialize in therapeutic treatments. This academic foundation has become the cornerstone of her new business model.
The decision to open a private studio was not spontaneous. While the idea had been brewing for years, the daily routine of renting treatment rooms in various salons delayed the transition. Draugelė notes that her maternity leave provided the necessary pause to evaluate her future.
“I knew that upon returning to work, I would need a new space. I decided that instead of renting again, I would invest in my own environment,” she explained. The name “Balta drobė” was chosen to symbolize a fresh start and the creative freedom to design a space according to her own aesthetic vision.
Transitioning from a self-employed individual to a business owner involved navigating the complexities of commercial real estate and financing. In Lithuania, a “Small Partnership” (Mažoji bendrija) is a common legal structure for startups and small-scale entrepreneurs due to its flexibility and specific tax considerations.
The expansion was made possible through financing from the “Magnus” credit union. Mantas Janavičius, Chairman of the Board at Magnus, noted that Draugelė’s story is a typical example of how long-term professional experience and clear motivation can evolve into a viable small business.
The new studio in Vilnius is currently undergoing final interior preparations. Draugelė plans to focus on therapeutic skincare while eventually building a team to offer a broader range of services. Despite being on leave, she reports consistent interest from long-term clients awaiting the studio’s opening.
