Late last week, the royal palace of Denmark announced that Queen Margrethe had been hospitalized. Today, they have confirmed that the former monarch, who abdicated the throne just over two years ago, has been discharged and is returning home following a heart procedure.
Queen Mary, Margrethe’s daughter-in-law, offered a brief but hopeful update to reporters at an event earlier today, saying that she had seen Margrethe ahead of her discharge and that the queen “is doing much better.” She added that the former monarch will be returning home to Fredensborg, where the family maintains the Fredensborg Palace, the “country seat,” for the royal family.
Margrethe was admitted to the hospital last week following incidence of chest pain, with the palace noting at the time that she would be held over the weekend for observation. She reportedly underwent angioplasty, a procedure to help widen the coronary artery to improve blood flow, at the end of the week and has now apparently recovered enough to be released.
Margrethe has stepped back slightly from the spotlight over the last two years since she made her surprise announcement that she would abdicate on New Years Eve in 2023. At the time, the news shocked the royal world, making her the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily abdicate. Her son, King Frederik, was officially crowned in January 2024, though Margrethe maintained the title of Queen alongside her daughter-in-law Mary.
Health concerns were seemingly part of her considerations in her decision to give up the crown. In announcing her decision, she shared at the time, “In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future–whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time.”
