The Häme Police Department located a wartime Russian bomb near an ice rink in the town of Riihimäki on Thursday after the explosive disappeared for almost a day, prompting a public warning and a criminal investigation.
The device was found close to its original location near a sports park and ice rink after police questioned a man suspected of moving the explosive from the scene.
Häme Police said the case is being investigated as an explosives offence.
The suspect, described as a middle-aged man, had earlier appeared in police appeals linked to the search.
According to Helsingin Sanomat, investigators believe the man moved the device after it was first discovered on Wednesday afternoon.
Police later confirmed that the suspect had not been arrested but had spoken with officers. During questioning, he revealed where the bomb had been left.
The explosive was recovered several dozen metres from the original discovery site. Authorities sealed off the area while the Finnish Defence Forces prepared to destroy the device later on Thursday.
A public danger warning issued during the search was later cancelled.
Police initially believed the object was a wartime grenade before identifying it as a Russian wartime incendiary bomb. Investigators later described it more broadly as a wartime Russian aerial bomb measuring several dozen centimetres in length.
Police also revealed they had received an earlier report on 2 April concerning a possible explosive in the same area. Authorities are now examining whether the April report was connected to the bomb recovered this week.
