(James Thompson)<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that, when checking in, he was given an orange sticker marked \u201dlift\u2019 to hang in his van.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Thompson said he was informed while boarding that the lift was already \u201cclosed up and blocked off\u201d and that he \u201cshould have been in a different loading area to get on earlier\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the start of today\u2019s States sitting, Deputy Montfort Tadier asked Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel if he had been made aware of the \u201charrowing case\u201d and whether he would conduct an investigation to understand what took place and \u201cmake sure it does not reoccur\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Morel responded: \u201cI\u2019m grateful to the Deputy for raising this important issue. The customer was correctly identified as needing assistance at checking in, but was put in the wrong lane and was missed when we loaded vehicles which needed lift access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lift was working. It was a failure of process to get the passenger close to it so they could easily get to the passenger decks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-weight: bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/news\/fast-ferry-access-restored-for-disabled-passengers-as-dfds-fixes-lift\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous issues with lift access on the Levante Jet vessel<\/a> were highlighted by Deputy Karen Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Morel noted that the previous concerns had involved the lift being out of service, highlighting that \u201cthe reasons for this incident appear to be very different\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is because of the difference in circumstances that I am saying that it does not appear to be systemic,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister also said he was \u201cpleased to see that DFDS have not hidden from this\u201d, pointing to operator\u2019s report to the vessel flag state and contact with the government\u2019s disability and inclusion unit. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat suggests to me strongly that they wish to learn from this and that is the appropriate attitude,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does not excuse the mistakes that led to these incidents, but it absolutely does suggest they have the right attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"478\" data-attachment-id=\"330934\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/news\/dfds-lift-access\/attachment\/dfds-side-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DFDS-side.jpg?fit=2030%2C1242&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"2030,1242\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;ROB CURRIE&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON Z 9&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Elizabeth Harbour, St Helier. Arrival of DFDS ferry company fast ferry called Tarifa Jet for berthing trials    11\/4\/25                     Picture: ROB CURRIE&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DFDS-side.jpg?fit=300%2C184&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DFDS-side.jpg?fit=780%2C478&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770850360_424_DFDS-side.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-330934\"  \/> <\/p>\n<p>In a statement following the States sitting, DFDS said it wished to \u201cclarify the circumstances\u201d of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe passenger \u2013 who had correctly notified DFDS of his accessibility needs in advance \u2013 was mistakenly left waiting on the quay while other vehicles began boarding,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time the disabled passenger\u2019s vehicle was directed on board, the loading pattern meant the passenger could not safely reach the lift in his wheelchair. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe passenger was informed of the situation before boarding and offered the option of transferring to a later sailing on another vessel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, as the passenger needed to be in the UK that evening to connect with another journey, he chose to continue the scheduled departure, fully aware that he would need to remain on the car deck for the crossing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added that a member of DFDS staff stayed with Mr Thompson throughout the journey \u201cto provide support\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lift on board was fully operational, the failure lay entirely in our boarding process. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a serious mistake on our part, and we are deeply sorry to the passenger for the distress and inconvenience caused. We accept we did not meet the standard of care that we set ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeputy Montfort Tadier has described the incident as \u2018inhumane and degrading\u2019.
