NATO’s new Forward Land Forces Finland, known as FLF Finland, formation will officially begin operations on Saturday, marking a new phase in the alliance’s military presence in Northern Europe and strengthening defence cooperation between Finland, Sweden and other allied nations.<\/p>\n

The new force combines a Swedish battlegroup based in Boden, northern Sweden, with a multinational command element located in Rovaniemi in northern Finland.<\/p>\n

Following its activation, both components will come under the authority of NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus G. Grynkewich.<\/p>\n

Finnish Defence Minister Antti H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen described the move as a major step for both Finland and the alliance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“The launch of FLF Finland is a significant step in the process to strengthen Finland and the northern flank of the whole Alliance,” H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said in a statement<\/a> issued by the Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n At the centre of the formation is a Swedish battalion-sized battlegroup of around 600 soldiers stationed in Boden, close to the Finnish border. The unit has been trained for operations in Arctic conditions and is designed to deploy rapidly into Finland when required.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n The force will not be permanently stationed in Finland. Instead, troops will participate in exercises and maintain readiness for deployment if needed, according to information released by Finnish authorities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n The battlegroup will operate under a multinational staff element in Rovaniemi, which will coordinate activities and exercises in northern Finland.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Finnish officials say the force is specifically designed for Arctic environments and northern security challenges.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n “FLF Finland will strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defence in the High North by providing forces specialised in Arctic conditions,” H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n He added that the arrangement would also give allied nations opportunities to train and develop land warfare capabilities in northern conditions.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n The launch reflects the growing military integration between Finland and Sweden following both countries’ accession to NATO.<\/p>\n
