\"\"\/Plainsboro: Novo Nordisk<\/a>\u2019s next-generation weight-loss candidate, zenagamtide<\/a> has delivered an average weight-loss of up to 14.6 per cent among patients with type-2 diabetes.<\/p>\n

According to the phase 2b trial results<\/a>, presented at the 2026 Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association<\/a>(ADA) in New Orleans, after 36 weeks of treatment, patients on the 40 mg dose \u2014highest investigated strength \u2014 demonstrated an mean body weight reduction of 14.6 per cent compared with 2.1 per ent on the group receiving placebo.<\/p>\n

Among the other doses evaluated doses, spanning 0.4 mg to 20 mg, mean weight loss ranged from 4.3 per cent to 13.1 per cent.<\/p>\n

On the study\u2019s primary endpoint of HbA1c reduction<\/a>, the once-weekly drug lowered blood sugar levels by up to 1.7 per cent, with up to 89.1 per cent of participants achieved HbA1c levels below 7 per cent.<\/p>\n

Novo Nordisk claims the findings indicate \u201cstrong glycaemic efficacy\u201d, noting that the higher dose treatment groups were exposed to the maintenance dose for a short period of time \u2014four weeks for 40 mg and eight weeks for 20 mg cohort<\/p>\n

The safety and tolerability profile in the 262 patient trial was consistent with other amylin-based therapies and most common adverse events were gastrointestinal in nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese phase 2 results build on the growing body of evidence which demonstrates the potential of zenagamtide to meaningfully impact blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes<\/a> and also body weight in people living with obesity,\u201d said Martin Holst Lange, chief scientific officer and executive vice president, Research & Development, Novo Nordisk.<\/p>\n

Zenagamtide is a dual-action mechanism driven unimolecular peptide which simultaneously targets GLP-1 and amylin, a peptide hormone co-secreted with insulin by pancreatic beta cells. It acts with insulin to regulate blood glucose levels by slowing gastric emptying, and suppressing glucagon secretion after meals.<\/p>\n

Currently the novel molecule is being investigated in both subcutaneous and oral presentation.<\/p>\n

The latest readouts provide a much-needed boost to the Danish drugmaker\u2019s next-generation obesity pipeline, following subdued outcomes for its upcoming commercial candidate, CagriSema, as competition with Eli Lilly intensifies.<\/p>\n

Last month, in a two-year long study (TRIUMPH-1) Eli Lilly\u2019s triple-agonist candidate retatrutide posted weight-loss results comparable to those seen with bariatric surgery, with reductions of up to 30 per cent from baseline.<\/p>\n

However, among patients with type 2 diabetes the drug recorded (TRANSCEND-T2D-1 trial) an average weight loss of 16.6 per cent at 40 weeks.<\/p>\n

Existing drugs, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, have shown 15-20 weight-loss, varying across treatment durations.<\/p>\n

Novo Nordisk intends to begin a phase 3 trial of zenagamtide in patients with type 2 diabetes in the second half of this year, while advancing a range of other clinical programmes.\n <\/p>\n
