Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) announced that prescriptions for the oral version of Wegovy have exceeded 3 million since the product\u2019s U.S. market introduction in January 2026. <\/p>\n
The milestone highlights a significant shift in the obesity care landscape, with data indicating that over 80% of new users are patients who had not previously utilized GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.<\/p>\n
The adoption rate for the daily pill has accelerated sharply since its launch. <\/p>\n
While the first million prescriptions were filled over a 12-week period, the subsequent two million were processed within a 10-week window\u2014averaging approximately one prescription every five seconds.<\/p>\n
“Wegovy pill and Wegovy HD available for weight management means patients and their healthcare providers are making choices that fit their needs,” said Jamey Millar, Executive Vice President of U.S. Operations at Novo Nordisk.<\/p>\n
Coinciding with this milestone is the commercial rollout of Wegovy HD, a new once-weekly 7.2 mg injectable dose of semaglutide. <\/p>\n
This formulation nearly triples the previous 2.4 mg maximum dose and is intended for patients who require additional weight reduction after tolerating lower doses. <\/p>\n
According to the company, Wegovy HD has experienced strong early uptake among providers and patients alike.<\/p>\n
The announcements were made during the American Diabetes Association\u2019s (ADA) 2026 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, where Novo Nordisk is sharing further clinical insights into the drug’s efficacy and cardiovascular benefits.<\/p>\n
To support patient access, Novo Nordisk has implemented a tiered affordability strategy. <\/p>\n
Commercially insured patients can access the medication for as little as $25 per month through savings programs, while a Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is scheduled to commence on July 1, 2026, providing eligible beneficiaries with a $50 monthly copay. <\/p>\n
