While Stockholm was Arop’s race to lose, Oslo is wide open, featuring a stacked field that includes world and Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Will Lutkenhaus replicate his winning result, can Arop get redemption or will Wanyonyi stop the clock first?

The Oslo Diamond League, the sixth meeting of the 2026 circuit, is set for Wednesday. Along with Lutkenhaus, Arop and Wanyonyi, the lineup will include Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui, Australia’s Peter Bol, Great Britain’s Max Burgin, Belgium’s Eliott Crestan and France’s Gabriel Tual.

Lutkenhaus on an upward trajectory

In March, Lutkenhaus made history, becoming the youngest individual world champion in track and field history at the World Indoor Championships in Poland. He also owns the world U18 record and North American U18 and U20 record of 1:42.27, set last August. The young American opened his outdoor season last month with a rare 1,500m at L.A. track festival, running 3:45.10; Stockholm marked his 2026 outdoor 800m debut.

Arop is just warming up

Stockholm marked Arop’s first race since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September. The Canadian, who appeared to be comfortably leading the Stockholm race until he was overtaken by the American in the closing metres, taking second in 1:43.11 to Lutkenhaus’s winning 1:42.70, will undoubtedly be gunning for a redemption run in Oslo.

Arop is the reigning Olympic silver medallist, 2023 world champion and reigning world bronze medallist. His personal best of 1:41.20, the North American record, ranks him fourth on the global all-time list.

Marco Arop beaten by 17-year-old rising star at Stockholm Diamond League

Wanyonyi has competed twice so far in 2026, opening his season in April with a 3:34.11 1,500m and running 1:43.56 for second in the 800m at last week’s Rabat Diamond League.

Gout Gout vs. Tebogo

Speaking of teen phenoms, Oslo will also mark the first time we’ll see Australia’s U20 world record holder Gout Gout and Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo on the same 200m starting line.
