{"id":10389,"date":"2026-02-12T08:40:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T08:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10389\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T08:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T08:40:12","slug":"nato-launches-arctic-sentry-military-effort-in-seeking-to-move-on-from-greenland-dispute-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10389\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO launches Arctic Sentry military effort in seeking to move on from Greenland dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">BRUSSELS (AP) \u2014 NATO on Wednesday launched a new military effort dubbed Arctic Sentry aimed at improving security in the High North, a month after U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-davos-housing-greenland-gaza-a2f3f4c18ba321c8025a3e208fc0ddf6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ramped up tensions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ramped up tensions<\/a> in the alliance with his threats to annex Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Initially, Arctic Sentry will be the NATO label for national military exercises in the region, such as Denmark\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-greenland-trump-diplomacy-military-options-502b9d33a42fd368dd2e9f7db59ba353\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Arctic Endurance;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Arctic Endurance<\/a> \u2014 which angered Trump so much that he threatened to slap tariffs on allies taking part \u2014 and Norway\u2019s Cold Response drills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Arctic Sentry is not a military operation. It does not involve the permanent or long-term deployment of troops to the region under a NATO banner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhat is really new about it is that for the first time now we will bring everything we do in the Arctic together under one command,\u201d NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told reporters in Brussels. He said it would help the alliance to \u201cassess which (security) gaps there are which we have to fill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn the face of Russia\u2019s increased military activity and China\u2019s growing interest in the High North, it was crucial that we do more,\u201d Rutte added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Arctic security has been on NATO\u2019s agenda in recent years \u2014 seven allies lie in the region, along with Russia \u2014 but pressure to act accelerated as Trump\u2019s determination to \u201cget\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greenland-denmark-security-trump-arctic-north-6066195d0c6b9e1bbe6da27d55b26ece\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Greenland;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Greenland<\/a> fueled tensions among the allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NATO\u2019s role in this series of military activities, which will be coordinated through its U.S. headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, is aimed at countering Russian and Chinese influence in the High North, which includes Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NATO\u2019s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, said in a statement that \u201cArctic Sentry underscores the alliance\u2019s commitment to safeguard its members and maintain stability in one of the world\u2019s most strategically significant and environmentally challenging areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As part of the effort, the United Kingdom has announced that the number of British troops deployed to Norway will double over three years from 1,000 to 2,000. Some will be involved in Exercise Lion Protector, already planned for September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Details are sketchy, but other NATO activities will be added to Arctic Sentry once broader security needs are assessed and as the national military exercises end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">France, Germany and Denmark have said they will take part but have not said how many troops would be involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NATO\u2019s primary role is to defend the territory of its 32 member states. The specter of the alliance\u2019s most powerful country threatening to annex part of another ally, Denmark, has deeply shaken the rest of the alliance.
