A knife attack in Belfast that left a man with life-changing injuries triggered a wave of disorder across Northern Ireland and protests in Scotland, as police, political leaders and community groups appealed for calm.<\/p>\n

The violence followed the charging of 30-year-old Hadi Alodid with attempted murder, possession of a knife and threats to kill after an attack in north Belfast on Monday night. Prosecutors told Belfast Magistrates’ Court that the victim, Steven Ogilvy, suffered severe injuries and lost his left eye.<\/p>\n

The court heard that Ogilvy, a man in his 40s, also suffered injuries to his right eye, neck and back. Alodid, who appeared by video link with the assistance of an Arabic interpreter, did not respond when the charges were read. The court remanded him in custody for four weeks and refused bail.<\/p>\n

Judge Steven Keown praised members of the public and emergency workers who came to the victim’s aid. He also warned that anyone involved in further disorder should expect imprisonment.<\/p>\n

The attack quickly became the focus of demonstrations across Belfast. By Tuesday evening, protests had escalated into violence in several parts of the city.<\/p>\n

In areas near the Shankill Road and east Belfast, masked groups targeted homes, vehicles and public property. A Glider bus was set on fire, cars were torched and several houses sustained fire damage. Witnesses described masked men carrying bricks, bottles and fireworks through residential streets.<\/p>\n

The Guardian<\/a> reported that one house occupied by people from an ethnic minority background was attacked after men forced entry through the front door while children were believed to be inside. Nearby properties and vehicles were also damaged as crowds gathered around burning wreckage.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Police officers and firefighters responded to multiple incidents across the city. PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said officers rescued numerous families from danger, including a two-month-old baby. Fire crews also helped evacuate residents from homes that came under attack.<\/p>\n
