{"id":10655,"date":"2026-02-12T13:04:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T13:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10655\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T13:04:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T13:04:07","slug":"coast-guard-awards-davie-defense-contract-for-5-icebreakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10655\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard awards Davie Defense contract for 5 icebreakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 The Coast Guard has awarded Davie Defense a contract for five Arctic Security Cutters (ASCs), completing the agreement laid out in an <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2025\/10\/white-house-finland-to-sign-deal-for-4-icebreakers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">October Memorandum of Understanding<\/a> between the White House and Finland, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4403354\/us-coast-guard-completes-the-presidents-contract-awards-for-11-arctic-security\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">service announced today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur adversaries continue to look to grow their presence in the Arctic, equipping the Coast Guard with Arctic Security Cutters will help reassert American maritime dominance there,\u201d said Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in the statement. \u201cRevitalizing the U.S. Coast Guard\u2019s icebreaking capabilities is crucial for our security and prosperity, and today\u2019s announcement is an important step in that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davie Defense, the American sister company to Canada\u2019s Davie, will build three of the medium-sized icebreakers domestically and two of them at at Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, per the announcement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t wait to get started on delivering mission-ready cutters to our valued U.S. Coast Guard partner,\u201d Davie Defense CEO Kai Skvarla said in a company statement. \u201cBy anchoring construction in Texas, while drawing on Helsinki Shipyard\u2019s proven icebreaker expertise, we can deliver the ASCs to meet the Coast Guard\u2019s operational needs in the world\u2019s harshest environments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4368196\/coast-guard-awards-contracts-to-build-arctic-security-cutters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two December contract awards<\/a> for up to six ASCs: one to Rauma Marine Constructions Oy in Finland for up to two ships and one to Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana for up to four.  <\/p>\n<p>The Memorandum of Understanding signed in October laid out an agreement for four ships to be built in Finland and seven in the US. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cooperation benefits both countries, Finland and the United States. The deal would not have been possible without President [Donald] Trump,\u201d Finnish President Alexander Stubb said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexstubb\/status\/1976231593577709820?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in a post on X<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>According to the formal announcements from the Coast Guard, the first icebreakers are set to be delivered in 2028. <\/p>\n<p>Davie in September invested <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2025\/09\/with-1b-and-a-new-shipyard-canadas-davie-sets-sights-on-coast-guards-new-icebreaker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1 billion into Gulf Copper shipyard<\/a>, a Texas company that the Canadian shipbuilder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.workboat.com\/davie-to-acquire-texas-shipyards-from-gulf-copper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">purchased last summer<\/a>.
