Latvia\u2019s parliament on Thursday restored the parliamentary mandates of former Prime Minister Evika Sili\u0146a and former Justice Minister Inese L\u012bbi\u0146a-Egnere, both members of New Unity.<\/p>\n
The Saeima also reinstated the parliamentary mandate of former Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis.<\/p>\n
At the same time, lawmakers approved temporary parliamentary mandates for Inga Priede and Normunds Dzintars.<\/p>\n
Political observers expect that Sili\u0146a could soon be entrusted with leading the Saeima\u2019s European Affairs Committee, which is currently chaired by Edmunds Cepur\u012btis.<\/p>\n
The Saeima also approved a number of changes to parliamentary committee memberships,<\/p>\n
appointing and removing deputies from various committees.<\/p>\n
Sili\u0146a was elected to the Budget and Finance (Taxation) Committee, with 75 deputies voting in favor and one against. She was also elected to the European Affairs Committee, a decision supported by 81 lawmakers.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, L\u012bbi\u0146a-Egnere was appointed to the Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee and the Public Expenditure and Audit Committee.<\/p>\n
Parliament also approved several changes involving other deputies. Raimonds Bergmanis was removed from the Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion Committee, Raivis Kal\u0113js from the Education, Culture and Science Committee, Aiva V\u012bksna from the Sustainable Development Committee, and Juris Vi\u013cums from the Foreign Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n
At the same time,<\/p>\n
Bergmanis was elected to the National Security Committee,<\/p>\n
while Kal\u0113js joined the Foreign Affairs Committee. V\u012bksna was elected to the Public Expenditure and Audit Committee, and Vi\u013cums joined the Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n
The Saeima also approved the appointment of Inga Priede to the Mandates, Ethics and Submissions Committee as well as the Education, Culture and Science Committee.<\/p>\n
Deputy \u0122irts \u0160tekerhofs was elected to the Sustainable Development Committee.<\/p>\n
Kaspars Melnis was elected to the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee and the Public Expenditure and Audit Committee.<\/p>\n
Normunds Dzintars was appointed to both the Education, Culture and Science Committee and the Public Expenditure and Audit Committee.<\/p>\n
Parliament additionally approved the appointment of Atis Labucis and Raimonds \u010cudars to the Public Administration and Local Government Committee.<\/p>\n
These changes follow the formation of Latvia\u2019s new government under Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs. As ministers from New Unity and former Prime Minister Sili\u0146a returned to the Saeima, several lawmakers who had been serving on so-called \u201csoft mandates\u201d were required to vacate their seats, including J\u0101nis Zari\u0146\u0161, Viesturs Zari\u0146\u0161, Gatis Liepi\u0146\u0161, and Ingr\u012bda Circene.<\/p>\n
