{"id":108349,"date":"2026-06-15T15:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T15:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/108349\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T15:33:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T15:33:17","slug":"denmark-and-pakistan-push-un-security-council-action-on-peacekeeper-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/108349\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark and Pakistan push UN Security Council action on Peacekeeper killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-Y4TXOYZTPZB2ZIR2BWNP2OKJGE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/02\/26\/denmark-to-hold-parliamentary-election-as-frederiksen-bets-on-greenland-crisis-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/02\/26\/denmark-to-hold-parliamentary-election-as-frederiksen-bets-on-greenland-crisis-boost\/\">Denmark<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=pakistan\">Pakistan<\/a> have proposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/06\/03\/germany-fails-to-gain-un-security-council-seat-for-first-time-as-five-new-members-elected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/06\/03\/germany-fails-to-gain-un-security-council-seat-for-first-time-as-five-new-members-elected\/\">UN Security Council<\/a> resolution to strengthen accountability for attacks on peacekeepers, citing a rise in assaults involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=drones\">drones<\/a> and other advanced weaponry that are growing risks to UN missions around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-HEG3TOEZVJBJPOW7TX7SLRBQCE\">The draft, which is open for co-sponsorship from member states, recognises the need for \u201cimmediate steps\u201d to address attacks on UN personnel and facilities, stressing that accountability is essential to deter future violence, protect peacekeeping operations and ensure the safety of personnel in the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-UCQ6S5Q2JNFFNNOT7CBYTIGSJA\">It calls on all relevant stakeholders to co-operate with the UN in identifying, investigating and prosecuting perpetrators without delay and seeks to strengthen co-operation between governments, the UN and troop-contributing countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-Q27L3CHSFVDEDMCXJXKHKTN57Q\">The text, seen by The National, recalls host states&#8217; responsibility to ensure peacekeepers&#8217; safety and urges countries to take all necessary measures to investigate attacks and prosecute those responsible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-OIZFTXCKB5FUZAUSVKDOQU3CCU\">Under the proposal, missions would be asked to promptly establish factual records following attacks and share them with national authorities conducting investigations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-6OSZ777R6NDOTCICF25PI6UDU4\">Speaking to The National, a UN diplomat involved in the drafting process framed the resolution for Islamabad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-6BWGQFYTOVARHDHCOJKCT52DZU\">\u201cFor Pakistan, this issue is deeply personal. Pakistan is one of the largest and longest-serving troop-contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping, and 183 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice. We know the human cost of peacekeeping,\u201d the diplomat said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-PAL3YUZZIFDGDJ36EOPZJVRCRI\">\u201cWe also know that the safety and security of peacekeepers cannot be strengthened without accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-FMEWPRJMVNCDLKR5ZFQTLQDMQM\">The initiative comes amid mounting concern over the safety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/06\/06\/france-weighs-post-unifil-security-force-for-southern-lebanon-envoy-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/06\/06\/france-weighs-post-unifil-security-force-for-southern-lebanon-envoy-says\/\">UN peacekeepers<\/a>, particularly in Lebanon, where seven members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/06\/01\/un-chief-gives-options-for-new-un-force-in-southern-lebanon-after-unifil-withdraws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/06\/01\/un-chief-gives-options-for-new-un-force-in-southern-lebanon-after-unifil-withdraws\/\">UN Interim Force in Lebanon<\/a> (Unifil) have been killed since fighting between Israel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=hezbollah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=hezbollah\">Hezbollah<\/a> escalated in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-V6YLCCTDBFCOHN32I7CRXGVTBM\">While attacks on UN personnel are not new, analysts say the nature of the threat has evolved over the past decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-6WTRGXOGAZHSRPV3ONSUWTDCGU\">Missions in Mali and the Central African Republic suffered waves of deadly attacks from insurgent groups, prompting the UN to devote greater resources to force protection, intelligence gathering and early warning systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-5VXNOUGRV5GTVCB2OTHOLJRODI\">Daniel Forti, a UN analyst at the International Crisis Group, said peacekeeping had become \u201can increasingly perilous enterprise\u201d as missions were asked to stabilise conflicts that lacked functioning political processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-67IUDR26BBFPFL5GODC2GOJAAM\">\u201cThis issue gained prominence a decade ago, when UN missions in the Central African Republic and Mali faced a surge in these unconventional attacks,\u201d he said. \u201cIn response, UN officials have tried to raise the political profile of this trend and enhance the security of their operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-J426RNAQ3RGSLJSLYEMJXB6ZFQ\">Analysts say accountability remains one of the weakest links in protecting peacekeepers.
