{"id":10871,"date":"2026-02-12T16:54:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T16:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10871\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T16:54:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T16:54:09","slug":"chp-youth-leader-gets-suspended-sentence-over-post-criticizing-prosecutor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10871\/","title":{"rendered":"CHP youth leader gets suspended sentence over post criticizing prosecutor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Cem-Aydin.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"391\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"Cem Ayd\u0131n\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Cem-Aydin-696x391.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"391\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Cem-Aydin-696x391.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Cem Ayd\u0131n\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Turkish court on Thursday handed down a suspended sentence of more than one year to Cem Ayd\u0131n, head of the youth wing of the main opposition Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP), after convicting him of \u201cinsulting a public official\u201d in a social media post criticizing a prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Cumhuriyet daily, the \u0130stanbul 14th High Criminal Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cumhuriyet.com.tr\/turkiye\/akin-gurlek-bakan-olduktan-sonra-gorulen-ilk-durusmada-karar-cikti-chp-li-cem-aydin-a-1-yil-5-ay-hapis-cezasi-2478194\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convicted<\/a> Ayd\u0131n over a video shared on the official X account of the CHP youth branch that criticized \u0130stanbul\u2019s then-chief public prosecutor, Ak\u0131n G\u00fcrlek.<\/p>\n<p>The court acquitted Ayd\u0131n of a separate charge of \u201ctargeting individuals involved in counterterrorism efforts\u201d and suspended the sentence, meaning he will not serve prison time unless he commits a similar offense within five years.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00fcrlek, who was appointed justice minister on Wednesday, has overseen controversial rulings targeting opposition politicians, journalists and activists since becoming \u0130stanbul\u2019s chief public prosecutor in October 2024. The <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/turkish-opposition-youth-leader-to-stand-trial-for-social-media-post-criticizing-controversial-prosecutor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> in question was a reaction to his role in cases that the opposition describes as politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>In the video CHP leader \u00d6zg\u00fcr \u00d6zel is seen calling G\u00fcrlek, who served as a high criminal court judge in the past, a \u201cmobile guillotine\u201d and accusing him of working as a political enforcer rather than an independent judge.<\/p>\n<p>Ayd\u0131n <a href=\"https:\/\/ankahaber.net\/haber\/detay\/cem_aydindan_akin_gurlek_davasi_sonrasi_aciklama_ulkemizin_gencligini_dogrudan_hedef_alan_gozdagi_vermeye_calisilan_bir_davadir_292118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the prosecution was intended to intimidate youth and described the sentence as political. He called the conviction a \u201cbadge of honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CHP has faced a series of prosecutions criticized as politically motivated and the seizure of some of its municipalities through trustee appointments following its sweeping 2024 local election victory.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure on the CHP and its municipalities has intensified since the arrest of \u0130stanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu, a senior member of the CHP considered to be the strongest political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan. He was detained along with dozens of \u0130stanbul city officials and was named his party\u2019s presidential candidate in March for the next general election scheduled for 2028.<\/p>\n<p>\u0130mamo\u011flu is accused of running what prosecutors call a \u201ccriminal organization\u201d within the municipality.
