{"id":10920,"date":"2026-02-12T17:50:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10920\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T17:50:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:50:16","slug":"top-ranked-canada-begins-bid-for-womens-curling-gold-with-win-over-denmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/10920\/","title":{"rendered":"Top-ranked Canada begins bid for women\u2019s curling gold with win over Denmark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/4BBVPHPAZJBSXJD5TMQKMGBDYY.jpg?auth=0152bdf6b079292119bc2d61e59ca14730b9a48866258c5771091d6e39a0709e&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Canada&#8217;s Sarah Wilkes, Rachel Homan and Emma Miskew compete against Denmark in a round-robin match on Thursday.Al Bello\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Rachel Homan\u2019s Canadian team started its bid for Olympic gold with a confident-looking 10-4 win over Denmark that needed just seven ends on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The skip Homan, lead Sarah Wilkes, second Emma Miskew and third Tracy Fleury won the first of Canada\u2019s nine round-robin games in the women\u2019s Olympic curling bonspiel, clearing off the ice in under two hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt feels great to get everyone out there for their first Olympic real game slides and throws and just really cool moment to share,\u201d said Homan after the game, wearing a delicate gold maple leaf earring and necklace set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canada is the favourite for gold in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/sports\/olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/sports\/olympics\/\">Cortina<\/a>, and the world\u2019s top-ranked women\u2019s team. Team Canada hasn\u2019t topped the women\u2019s Olympic curling podium since Team Jennifer Jones did it at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/sports\/olympics\/article-canada-aims-for-more-short-track-medals-as-mens-and-womens-hockey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Live coverage today from the Winter Games<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">This marks Homan\u2019s third straight Olympic appearance but she has yet to reach the podium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Homan, Fleury, Miskew and Wilkes have been the most dominant women\u2019s team in the granite game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">They won back-to-back Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2024 and 2025 going a perfect 22-0, as well as the past two titles at the World Women\u2019s Curling Championship and seven Grand Slam titles. <\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/BHXGEUNZ5NGJPD4WTVIIQE2XBE.JPG?auth=68cc96256f4fc83b7bed4125d201b4298b1cc3d76cc5135e8e373ea84aa0bcaa&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Team Canada in action against Denmark.Issei Kato\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Thursday, Homan\u2019s draw for two in the first end launched Canada out to a fast lead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But Denmark evened the score in the second and then managed a steal for one in the third to pull ahead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canada stuck to its game plan knowing the Danes love to draw, led by skip Madeleine Dupont and her sister, lead and five-time Olympian Denise Dupont.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canada scored a single in the fourth end to knot up the game again but then made its big jump in the fifth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Team Homan was sitting five, and Denmark with the hammer was only able to count them down one, allowing Canada a massive steal of four and a 7-3 lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The businesslike Canadians didn\u2019t celebrate much as they gathered at their bench for the mid-game break to snack on protein bites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Denmark answered with a single in the sixth end before Fleury threw a couple of beautiful shots to clear out Danish stones in the seventh, setting up a triple for Canada, and Denmark conceded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/sports\/olympics\/article-jacobs-canada-take-mens-curling-opener-in-extra-ends\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacobs, Canada take men\u2019s curling opener in extra ends<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe team played really well. Everyone had their draw weight locked in and hit lines were looking really good, so a good start,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cIt\u2019s loud, and there\u2019s flags everywhere, and it\u2019s just a really exciting environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canada was pleased with the win but measured.
