OSLO \u2013 Norway\u2019s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has undergone a successful lung transplant and is recovering from the procedure, the royal household said \u200bin a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The 52-year-old wife of Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to \u200cthe Norwegian throne, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, a chronic disease that causes scarring in the lungs and leads to a reduced oxygen uptake.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike all newly transplanted patients, the crown princess will remain at the hospital for \u200bseveral weeks to come,\u201d Oslo University Hospital Professor Are Holm said in a statement provided \u200bby the palace.<\/p>\n
The surgery comes at a strained time for the royal family: earlier \u2060this week, Mette-Marit\u2019s 29-year-old son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Hoiby, was convicted of rape \u200band domestic violence and sentenced to\u00a0four <\/a>years <\/a>in <\/a>prison.<\/p>\n Oslo University Hospital\u00a0on <\/a>June <\/a>5 <\/a>said\u00a0Mette-Marit had been \u200bplaced on a waiting list for a lung transplant after a significant deterioration in her health that likely gave her only a year to live without the surgery.<\/p>\n The crown prince and crown princess thanked the public for the warm and \u200bkind greetings they had received recently, the palace said.
