REUTERS\/Tom Little Purchase Licensing Rights, opens new tab<\/a>COPENHAGEN, May 8 (Reuters) – The king of Denmark has asked Defence Minister \u200bTroels Lund Poulsen to explore the formation of \u200ca potential centre-right government following the breakdown<\/a> of negotiations among centre-left parties, the royal palace said on Friday.Denmark’s March election<\/a> for parliament \u200bresulted in a fragmented assembly of 12 parties, \u200bwith Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen \u2060leading negotiations since then, hoping to secure a \u200bthird term in office.<\/p>\n

But Frederiksen’s talks with likely partners reached a stalemate<\/a> \u200bin recent weeks, slowing down government decision making amid efforts to resolve a crisis in ties with U.S. President Donald \u200bTrump’s administration over Greenland.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Lars Lokke Rasmussen \u200band his centrist Moderate Party ended talks with Frederiksen and proposed \u200cthat \u2060the task of leading the negotiations should be given to Lund Poulsen, who heads the right-wing Liberal Party.<\/p>\n

If Lund Poulsen succeeds in finding sufficient support \u200bfrom right-wing and \u200bcentrist groups, \u2060he could become prime minister. If he fails, the task of leading the \u200btalks will pass back to Frederiksen or \u200bto \u2060one of the other party leaders.<\/p>\n

Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, in power since 2019, won 38 seats in the \u2060179-seat parliament, \u200bdown from 50 in 2022, \u200bmaking it their worst election result since 1903.<\/p>\n
