The conservation work, commissioned by the Cultural Infrastructure Centre, gives visitors a broader view of the estate’s working life as well as its representative manor history.

Liubavas village is located in Vilnius District, the municipality surrounding Lithuania’s capital. The manor estate is managed by the public institution Europos Parkas. Of about 20 buildings once believed to have stood in the complex, 10 have survived, and some have already been restored and adapted for museum use.

The barn restoration took place in 2023-2025. Its foundations, walls and wooden roof structure were restored, the shingle roof was reconstructed and conserved, and the gates, doors and floors were repaired. The value of the work was 331,000 euros.

The building covers about 900 square metres and is 12 metres high. A future exhibition is planned inside the barn, focusing on 19th- and 20th-century activities that took place there. Museum founder and sculptor Gintaras Karosas says the space should help present the technical progress of the period and the daily economy of the manor.

The Liubavas Manor icehouse has also been restored. Research describes it as a stone and concrete masonry structure partly sunk into the ground, with elements of historicist architecture, including a portico, a triangular pediment and authentic masonry structures.

The works included fire and security alarms, electrical wiring, lightning protection, and restoration of fieldstone masonry, architectural details, the roof, floors, doors and windows. The value of the icehouse works exceeded 157,000 euros.

Karosas has described the icehouse as an exceptional building, saying Lithuania has no direct analogue to it. According to him, it was probably used for only a short period because refrigerators appeared soon after it was built, but its architecture makes it a notable feature for arriving visitors.

Liubavas Manor is mentioned in written sources from the 16th century. Its history is linked to Albertas Gostautas, Sigismund Augustus, and the Tiskevicius and Slizienis families. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the estate was one of the most advanced farms in the region.

Sarunas Soblinskas, director of the Cultural Infrastructure Centre, said heritage preservation includes not only representative buildings but also the agricultural structures that form an integral part of historic manor complexes. He said the restored barn and icehouse will help preserve the authenticity of Liubavas Manor and improve public access to Lithuania’s manor heritage.

The works were financed by Lithuania’s programme for the conservation of immovable cultural heritage, which covered about 75 percent of the total amount, and by Europos Parkas as the estate manager.

                                Context & actions
About this article

                                Report
Share

                    Source check
Šaltinio patikra

Tekstas parengtas remiantis Kultūros infrastruktūros centro pateikta informacija apie Liubavo dvaro sodybos darbus.

Checks

Patikrinta, kokie du pastatai sutvarkyti Liubavo dvaro sodyboje.

ScopeLiubavas, Vilniaus rajonas

Updated2026-06-18 14:21

        Report

Article contextPeople & topics3#7Gintaras KarosasŠarūnas ŠoblinskasAlbertas Goštautas

Liubavas Manor Museum in Vilnius District, Lithuania, has added two restored heritage buildings: a barn and a historic…

[93
56044,56047,25051,171,56045,56046,56043,170,43713
post-111395","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vilnius","tag-cultural-infrastructure-centre","tag-europos-parkas","tag-heritage-conservation","tag-lithuania","tag-liubavas-manor","tag-liubavas-manor-museum","tag-manor-heritage","tag-vilnius","tag-vilnius-district
["GET
