The decision follows months of pressure from Labour MPs and comes days after Andy Burnham returned to Parliament with a by-election win that reshaped the political landscape.

Starmer made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street on Monday. He said he had accepted that he was no longer the right person to lead Labour into the next general election and had informed King Charles of his intention to resign as party leader.

The prime minister said he would remain in office until Labour completes a leadership contest expected to conclude before Parliament returns in September. Labour’s National Executive Committee will oversee the process, with nominations due to open on 9 July and close before the summer recess on 16 July.

Speaking from a podium outside Downing Street, Starmer said: “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.”

“I have heard the answer from my parliamentary party to that question and I accept that answer with good grace.”

The announcement ends weeks of speculation over his future. Publicly, Starmer had insisted he intended to remain in office.

Labour suffered setbacks in local and devolved elections during May. Many MPs reported voter dissatisfaction on the campaign trail and growing concern over the rise of Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage.

The situation changed last week when Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, won the Makerfield by-election and returned to Westminster.

Burnham is now widely viewed as the favourite to replace Starmer. Allies of the former mayor believe he has support across large sections of the parliamentary party and could secure the nominations needed to enter the contest.

Starmer’s departure marks a sharp reversal in fortunes for a politician who led Labour from opposition to government. Elected Labour leader in 2020, he inherited a party weakened by internal divisions and electoral defeat. Over four years he rebuilt Labour’s parliamentary position and secured a commanding Commons majority in the 2024 general election.

At the time, Labour’s victory ended 14 years of Conservative government and delivered one of the largest parliamentary majorities in modern British politics.

Yet once in office, Starmer struggled to maintain political momentum. His government faced criticism over a series of policy reversals and disagreements within Labour ranks. Several decisions drew opposition from MPs who questioned both the direction of government policy and the leadership’s handling of key issues.

Among the most contentious episodes was the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States. The decision generated criticism after details emerged concerning Mandelson’s links to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The controversy fuelled wider concerns inside Labour about judgement and decision-making at the centre of government.

Labour MPs also voiced frustration over changes to welfare policy, winter fuel support and other measures that were later revised following internal opposition.

The leadership transition will now determine who becomes Britain’s next prime minister. If Burnham secures enough support and faces no serious challenge, Labour could install a new leader before Parliament rises for the summer.

Starmer said he would work to ensure an orderly handover.

“I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support,” he said.

Despite domestic political difficulties, Starmer leaves office after playing a prominent role on international issues. He worked alongside European leaders on support for Ukraine and maintained regular contact with US President Donald Trump during periods of international tension.

HT

Keir Starmer has announced he will step down as prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing…

[87
43060,14158,19824,158,113,57018,57019,7563,15701,57020,43059,57021
post-113874","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-helsinki","tag-andy-burnham","tag-british-politics","tag-downing-street","tag-finland","tag-helsinki","tag-keir-starmer-resignation","tag-labour-leadership-contest","tag-labour-party","tag-reform-uk","tag-uk-prime-minister","tag-wes-streeting","tag-westminster
["GET
