(AP Photo\/Matt Dunham)<\/p>\n<p>Str\u00f8m called the vote a \u201chistoric day in the Faroe Islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cIt guarantees access to safe <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/policy\/healthcare\/\">healthcare<\/a>, and it also protects our freedom to make decisions about our own lives without fear, without stigma, and without criminalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Thursday\u2019s vote, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pro-life\/\">abortion was outlawed<\/a> on the Faroe Islands unless it met specific criteria, such as a health risk or severe abnormalities.<\/p>\n<p>These regulations were introduced by the Kingdom of Denmark in 1956 and maintained on the island even after its parent nation liberalized its own abortion policy in 1973. The country passed legislation that allowed abortion up to 12 weeks, and this year expanded that window to 18 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The number of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/europe\/\">European nations<\/a> with outright bans on elective abortion is dwindling and mostly confined to microstates.
