A Trump administration official is defending President Donald Trump\u2019s controversial vow<\/a> to acquire Greenland<\/a> by touting the benefits it would have for a fast casual restaurant chain.<\/p>\n

Tom Dans<\/a>, whom Trump appointed as the chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission in December of last year,\u00a0made the eyebrow-raising suggestion\u00a0in an interview<\/a> with The New Yorker\u2019s Ben Taub published week.<\/p>\n

According to Taub,\u00a0Dans declined to speak on the record about Trump\u2019s fixation on seizing Greenland for the U.S., but nonetheless offered \u201ca narrow, symbiotic vision\u201d as to why such an acquisition was a good idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy view is that the United States could take all the seafood Greenland could produce and cut out the middleman, and keep it from China \u2014 and you could bring back all-you-can-eat shrimp at Red Lobster,\u201d Dans said.<\/p>\n

Dans\u2019 remark was included in a larger June 15 expos\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cInside the Ludicrous, Deadly Serious Plan to Take Over Greenland,\u201d in which Taub points out that while Trump hasn\u2019t spoken publicly about his plan for acquiring Greenland \u2015 currently a semiautonomous Danish territory \u2015 as of late, it hasn\u2019t gone away.<\/p>\n

In an interview with NPR<\/a> discussing his article,\u00a0Taub said Dans \u201cspent the weeks following the [2024] election pushing his Greenland agenda in conversations with people who were on the transition team until it eventually became one of Trump\u2019s central fixations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dans\u2019 claim about Red Lobster comes at a bit of an inflection point for the Orlando, Florida-based restaurant chain, which closed<\/a> 129 of its locations across the U.S.\u00a0after a May 2024 bankruptcy<\/a> filing.\u00a0Earlier this month,\u00a0Red Lobster confirmed it was shuttering its Times Square restaurant<\/a> in New York after 23 years of operation.<\/p>\n

As for Dans\u2019\u00a0allusion to\u00a0\u201call-you-can-eat shrimp,\u201d he appeared to be referencing Red Lobster\u2019s\u00a0\u201cEndless Shrimp\u201d offer, cited by<\/a>\u00a0numerous outlets<\/a> as having contributed significantly to the company\u2019s financial losses before it was discontinued in 2023. In April,\u00a0Red Lobster brought back a revised version<\/a> of the offer for a limited time due to fan requests.<\/p>\n

While Trump himself has been seemingly focused on other foreign policy concerns, including the Iran war, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has drawn criticism for flippantly alluding<\/a> to the president\u2019s long-held plan to acquire Greenland\u00a0\u2015 and his refusal to rule out<\/a> using U.S. military pressure to achieve it \u2015\u00a0earlier this month.<\/p>\n

When Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.) asked Rubio if he was \u201caware that Greenland is indeed part of Denmark\u201d\u00a0as he testified in front of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he replied:\u00a0\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n
