{"id":116116,"date":"2026-06-25T11:15:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T11:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/116116\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T11:15:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T11:15:18","slug":"the-staying-power-of-scandinavian-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/116116\/","title":{"rendered":"The staying power of Scandinavian design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-testid=\"article-description\">Visitors to 3daysofdesign 2026 in Copenhagen confirm this minimalist aesthetic will never go out of style\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">FOR 65 years, Milan Furniture Fair has been the most influential annual event in <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/lifestyle\/bt-luxe\/bt-luxe\/spotlight-milan-design-week-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the world of interior design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But in recent years, Copenhagen\u2019s 3daysofdesign has gained greater prominence, turning the Danish capital into a carnival city with exhibitions, events and dinners held in showrooms, studios and other unconventional venues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Started in 2013 with the aim of building community and connections in the design world, the event with a casual and convivial approach has attracted a growing number of visitors each year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/9318c6c054c44aec8d09632cae2268c7423745ae3ceac1314ec07283a90257fc.webp\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/> The interior design event 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen is aimed at building community and connections. PHOTO: 3DAYSOFDESIGN  <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">As many as 125,000 people attended its 2026 event from Jun 10 to 12, which was themed \u201cMake this Moment Matter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">While the 572 exhibitions and 894 events provided an opportunity to explore global design, 3daysofdesign also cemented Copenhagen\u2019s role as the bastion of Scandinavian design \u2013 and the way this aesthetic has stayed relevant all these years.<\/p>\n<p>Three days of design<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWhat I personally enjoyed about 3daysofdesign was the Danish hospitality,\u201d says Nikki Lim, associate director of Singapore furniture store Xtra. \u201cIt was as though I was being welcomed into people\u2019s homes, having a cup of tea and listening to their stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Xtra stocks several Scandinavian brands such as Muuto, Carl Hansen &amp; Son, Norr11 and Audo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">At the event, Danish design brand Fritz Hansen threw a street party dubbed the Fritz Hansen Sound Club, where a DJ spun tracks. This was to mark the 90th anniversary of its Kaiser Idell table lamp, designed by Christian Dell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Visitors were invited to sit on the iconic Series 7 chairs from the brand and listen to vinyl music on Technics vinyl players. These designs endure because they eschew trends, he adds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Xtra\u2019s Lim echoes this sentiment. \u201cRather than chasing trends and encouraging mass consumerism, the focus is on quality craftsmanship, using honest materials and <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/lifestyle\/inside-singapore-home-trades-glass-walls-new-england-charm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">provoking conscious decision-making<\/a> in a home for which a person will purchase a piece of \u2018forever furniture\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/e921a7efd1fca9f90c2fcd709c4e138986f03afec065b50b3ba2ff3477d39e00.webp\" alt=\"\" height=\"1425\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/> Fritz Hansen&#8217;s Kaiser Idell lamp turns 90 in 2026. PHOTO: FRITZ HANSEN  <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">One showpiece at 3daysofdesign was Carl Hansen &amp; Son\u2019s Scimitar chair, designed by Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm in the 1960s. Its seat lets the user comfortably cross their legs, similar to sitting cross-legged on the floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic design<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Veekrit Palarit, the founder of Bangkok-based Scandinavian furniture store, Norse Republics, believes the appeal of Scandinavian design is universal because it focuses on things that do not change with trends, such as comfort, functionality and simplicity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cA chair should be comfortable, a lamp should create good light, and a home should feel calm and welcoming,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He first encountered Scandinavian design in a visit to Copenhagen in 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/d2fc134b81dcced1fee9d4ec7f0ecdfb3d8d78feece0cbc0e9ebbd500b08b208.webp\" alt=\"\" height=\"855\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/> The Scimitar chair was designed by Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm in the 1960s. I was struck by how much of Scandinavian design and architecture was created for people and the public,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t about making icons or becoming famous. It was about improving everyday life and making good design accessible to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Palarit is a regular 3daysofdesign attendee. He feels that Copenhagen feels simpler, humbler and more honest than other European countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI really connected with the culture,\u201d he says. \u201cOver time, I saw those same values reflected in the design itself. The best Scandinavian designs don\u2019t try too hard to stand out. They quietly do their job and make life better.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Craft and materials\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Good materials and craft techniques are integral to the longevity of  a design, notes Jefery Knurniadidjaja, co-founder of Grafunkt in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cRather than concealing materials, Scandinavian design celebrates them. Wood, leather and other natural materials develop a rich patina over time, allowing the pieces to become even more beautiful with age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Another design house, House of Finn Juhl (HFJ), showcased its Silverware Cabinet at 3daysofdesign.<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4ed2f716c8fd8cb465eb1abdca3f3d33639e126aea190e071d03c4787455a5d3.webp\" alt=\"\" height=\"1710\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full\"\/> House of Finn Juhl\u2019s Silverware Cabinet was introduced in 1949. PHOTO: GRAFUNKT  <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Introduced at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker\u2019s Guild Exhibition in 1949, the piece by master cabinet maker Niels Vodder contrasts dark American walnut with light Oregon pine for a classic profile that still looks modern today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Scandinavian design\u2019s clean lines fit easily into various interiors.<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8e540ce7240e749648327d8a3732adc7076d4e9759288f9ca0657c1293d6b7e0.webp\" alt=\"\" height=\"1710\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/> Philippe Malouin\u2019s Mimi sofa for HAY combines hard and soft elements. PHOTO: HAY  <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For example, the new Philippe Malouin\u2019s Mimi sofa for HAY combines a precise structure with soft edges and comfortable cushions. HAY is one of the most popular brands at Grafunkt as their designs appeal to a broad range of customers, says Knurniadidjaja.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Danish way of life<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Materials and craft are integral to the work of Christian+Jade, a studio by Danish-Singaporean couple, Christian Hammer Juhl and Jade Chan, who met while studying at Design Academy Eindhoven in The Netherlands. They are now based in Copenhagen.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cLiving in Denmark has really changed the way I understand material, craft and timelessness,\u201d says Chan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThe city has a really strong design history, which is still part of the everyday.
