Via Lietuva, the state-owned company responsible for Lithuania’s national roads, is starting ordinary repair works on a section of more than 10 km.

The first works will involve installing central barriers and temporary road signs. Contract works are scheduled to begin on July 9-10. In 2026, repairs will be carried out on the left side of the road in the Kaunas-to-Vilnius direction, from kilometre 39.72 to kilometre 50.00.

The A1 is Lithuania’s main east-west motorway, linking the capital Vilnius, the country’s second-largest city Kaunas, and the Baltic Sea port city of Klaipėda. The section near Elektrėnai, a municipality located between Vilnius and Kaunas, is described by Via Lietuva as one of the busiest in the country.

That means the changes may affect daily commuters, freight operators, local residents and weekend travellers. The right side of the road, covering the section from kilometre 39.29 to kilometre 55.58, is scheduled for works in 2027.

Project detail
Information for drivers

First restrictions
From June 29

Start of contract works
July 9-10

2026 section
39.72-50.00 km, Kaunas-to-Vilnius direction

2027 stage
39.29-55.58 km, right side of the road

Contractor
AB Kauno tiltai

Contract value
EUR 20 million including VAT

During the works, traffic will be organised under a “3+1” scheme. Via Lietuva says two traffic lanes will be maintained in each direction, but drivers should choose the correct lane in advance, especially if they plan to exit towards nearby areas.

Temporary signs and barriers mean narrower lanes, less room for manoeuvring and a higher risk of mistakes in the work zone. Drivers are urged to follow temporary speed limits and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

“Drivers should know that this section between Vilnius and Kaunas is one of the busiest in Lithuania, so traffic organisation will inevitably change during the works and travel times may become slightly longer,” said Martynas Gedaminskas, head of Via Lietuva.

Under the contract, a total of 26.56 km of road section will be repaired and one bridge will be renovated. The contractor is AB Kauno tiltai, and the contract value is EUR 20 million including VAT.

Juras Taminskas, acting minister of transport and communications, said Lithuania is continuing road renewal work across the country. “This year, almost 200 kilometres of intensive repair works await on motorways and main roads, while bridges, viaducts and regional roads are also being repaired,” he said.

He added that drivers using the repaired road would need patience, but that the works should lead to safer and more comfortable journeys once completed.

The Elektrėnai works are part of a wider repair programme on Lithuania’s main roads. On the A1, ordinary repair works have already started on the right side of the road from kilometre 230.4 to kilometre 234.9 in the Klaipėda direction, in Šilalė District Municipality. Those works are being carried out by Kelių priežiūra and are planned to finish by November.

Near Klaipėda, repairs began in early June on both sides of the A1 from kilometre 305.63 to kilometre 306.13. The contractor is YIT Lietuva, and completion is also planned for November. Another A1 section, from kilometre 300.00 to kilometre 300.86 on the right side of the road, is also scheduled for completion in November.

Works on the A1 from kilometre 89.42 to kilometre 94.34 on the right side are planned to finish by October. On the A2 Vilnius-Panevėžys road, works from kilometre 45.20 to kilometre 49.17 on the right side are due to end in November.

Via Lietuva says about 170 km of the country’s worst-condition road sections are planned for repair in 2026. Around 100 km are expected to be completed this year, with the remaining works to continue in 2027.

The main focus is on the A1 Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda and A2 Vilnius-Panevėžys roads, where more than 120 km of roads and 24 engineering structures are planned for repair. Ordinary repair is intended to remove surface defects and extend road service life without fundamentally changing the entire road structure.

Drivers are advised to plan trips in advance, allow extra time and consider alternative routes where possible.

                                Context & actions
About this article

                                Report
Share

                    Source check
Šaltinių takas

Publikacija parengta remiantis „Via Lietuva“ pateikta informacija apie A1 remonto darbus ties Elektrėnais.

Checks

Patikrintos nurodytos darbų pradžios datos: birželio 29 d. ribojimai ir liepos 9–10 d.
Atskirtos 2026 m. ir 2027 m. darbų kryptys bei kilometrai.
Sulyginti rangovo, sutarties vertės ir bendros darbų apimties duomenys.
Straipsnyje neįtraukti išoriniai šaltiniai, kurių nepateikė pradinė medžiaga.

Source„Via Lietuva“ pranešimas per BNS

ScopeElektrėnų savivaldybė

Updated2026-06-29 09:36

        Report

Article contextPeople & topics2#7Juras TaminskasMartynas Gedaminskas

Prepared by the infoerdve.lt editorial team based on a Via Lietuva notice distributed via BNS.
