Global container shipping firm Maersk has shifted most of its eastbound container traffic out of Southern California from BNSF to Union Pacific, according to rail traffic tracking firm RailState<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Over the last year, 90% of Maersk traffic tracked by RailState – more than 100,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units, the standard measure of container traffic) – has moved on BNSF, the company reports<\/a>. As of mid-May, UP was handling only a single-digit percentage of this traffic. <\/p>\n

But as of the week of June 1, UP’s share of the traffic surpassed 50%, and the following week, it was at 76%, RailState reports. Since the shift began in late May, UP has carried roughly 59% of the volume. RailState’s tracking shows that almost all of the Maersk traffic has moved via the Sunset Route, rather than the Los Angeles & Salt Lake, the company said. <\/p>\n

UP spokeswoman Jill Micek said in an email to Trains that, “in general, we’re experiencing increases across carriers, consistent with an early peak season.” The company was unable to specifically address Maersk, she said, because it is in its quiet period before its quarterly earnings release. Federal securities regulations limit information that can be released to the public from late in the final month of a quarter until the release of its quarterly earnings information. <\/p>\n

A BNSF spokesman said the railway could not comment on its commercial arrangement with Maersk. <\/p>\n

A change in the Maersk-BNSF relationship would be significant. Maersk’s history with the railroad and predecessor Santa Fe is so extensive that the ATSF once repainted three of its locomotives into Maersk (or Maersk Sealand) colors in a promotional move; one of those locomotives is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum [see “Two former Amtrak diesels donated \u2026,”<\/a> Trains.com, July 2, 2025]. <\/p>\n

RailState acquires its data through proprietary trackside sensors that read ID information on the containers. <\/p>\n
