{"id":121480,"date":"2026-07-03T09:24:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T09:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/121480\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T09:24:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T09:24:41","slug":"two-ships-to-be-sold-as-brittany-ferries-adapts-to-financial-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/121480\/","title":{"rendered":"Two ships to be sold as Brittany Ferries adapts to financial challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROUTE changes are being implemented by Brittany Ferries as part of a cost-saving \u201cplan for the future\u201d that includes the sale of two ships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ferry firm \u2013 which lost the contract to became Jersey\u2019s key route operator to DFDS in 2024 \u2013 has stated that it is contending with a rising tax burden, Covid loan repayments and cost-of-living concerns among passengers as well as \u201cunfair competition on the Eastern Channel, caused by subsidies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the financial challenges it faces this year is a bill of around \u20ac27 million under the EU\u2019s Emission Trading System. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To facilitate a \u201cpragmatic approach\u201d to its fleet, Brittany Ferries\u2019 Poole to Cherbourg route served by its Barfleur\u00a0vessel will be closed from November and the ship sold. A daily service from Portsmouth to Cherbourg will operate in its place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And 2007-built ferry Cotentin,\u00a0which runs Cherbourg to Rosslare, will also be sold \u2013 though the route will continue to operate with other vessels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the company is looking to close its Portsmouth to Le Havre route from October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the changes, Brittany Ferries has announced that its ships serving Guernsey, Poole and Cherbourg will be allocated to \u201ca more efficient schedule\u201d from the start of November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will see Islander serve a triangular route from Portsmouth to Guernsey, Guernsey to Cherbourg and Cherbourg to Portsmouth, while fast-craft Voyager\u00a0will continue operating sailings between Poole and Guernsey but with the option to travel on to St Malo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief executive\u00a0Christophe Mathieu said Brittany Ferries \u201chas a track record in adapting its business to long- and short-term challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continued: \u201cWe overcame Covid when borders were shut, we continue to wrestle with the consequences of Brexit and we are taking steps to make a holiday in France or Spain as reasonable as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" data-attachment-id=\"4148016\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/jerseyeveningpost.com\/img37890613\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerseyeveningpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Img37890613-scaled.jpg?fit=2560%2C1707&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;ROB CURRIE&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON Z 9&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Elizabeth harbour terminal.
