{"id":121786,"date":"2026-07-03T16:46:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T16:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/121786\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T16:46:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T16:46:14","slug":"trump-has-not-forgotten-about-threats-to-seize-greenland-u-s-envoy-says-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/121786\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump \u2018has not forgotten\u2019 about threats to seize Greenland, U.S. envoy says &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> special envoy to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/greenland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland<\/a> says Trump \u201chas not forgotten\u201d about his desire to take over the Danish territory, saying it was raised as recently as last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In a podcast released Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/jeff-landry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Landry<\/a>, who is also the sitting governor of Louisiana, said the U.S. could \u201cbring them right into the fold\u201d with \u201csome little things,\u201d like sending more military personnel and opening up more trade, which he claimed Greenlanders support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was talking to me Saturday night, \u2018We need to get Greenland,&#8217;\u201d Landry said of Trump while speaking on Breitbart\u2019s Alex Marlow Show. \u201cHe has not forgotten about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI laid out some things with the president,\u201d Landry said later. \u201cLet me tell you, from a strategic natural resources standpoint, that place is unbelievably important to us. I mean, there\u2019s a great oil and gas reserve there. There are great rare earth minerals there. There\u2019s great fishing there. I mean, it\u2019s a great place, so we\u2019re gonna get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s vocal push to acquire Greenland early this year \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11621344\/donald-trump-greenland-takeover-threats-davos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refusal to rule out using military force to do so<\/a> \u2014 rattled Greenland and Denmark, a NATO ally that controls the self-governing island, and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11615647\/greenland-donald-trump-nato-canada-eu-retaliation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatened to further rupture U.S. relations with the rest of the alliance.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11623144\/donald-trump-greenland-framework-deal-nato-tariffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump backed down on his threats in late January<\/a> after speaking with NATO leaders and agreeing to talks between the U.S., Greenland and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Canada \u2018will continue to stand with Denmark and Greenland\u2019: Carney on Arctic Security'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/CARNEY_VMS.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t5:11<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCanada \u2018will continue to stand with Denmark and Greenland\u2019: Carney on Arctic Security\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Landry visited Greenland in May and claimed on Wednesday\u2019s podcast that, based on that trip, \u201cthe people of Greenland want to be with the United States\u201d and are seeking \u201ca closer relationship,\u201d including more military presence.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to free themselves from Danish control, and so now it\u2019s a matter of just making that happen. And I think it\u2019s easy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the U.S. once had a much larger military presence in Greenland but reduced it in recent decades. <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11603097\/trump-greenland-security-minerals-nato-explained\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Only one permanent U.S. military outpost<\/a>, the Pituffik Space Base, remains in Greenland today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like \u2026 you had a girlfriend in high school, OK?\u201d Landry said. \u201cAnd y\u2019all dated. Maybe you dated into college. It was great. It was a great relationship. And then it just fell apart. You didn\u2019t leave on bad terms, you just left. And then you see her like 10 or 15 years later and you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh my God, let\u2019s just get married.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so the Greenlanders are just a little gun-shy. \u2026 They wanna know that if we\u2019re coming back, there\u2019s gonna be some permanence to it and it\u2019s gonna be good for them. And so I think we\u2019re gonna get it. I really do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11656304\/u-s-threats-revive-independence-debate-for-inuit-in-greenland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A February poll conducted for The Copenhagen Post<\/a> found that 62 per cent percent of Greenlanders don\u2019t support independence from Denmark, <a href=\"https:\/\/cphpost.dk\/2026-02-05\/news\/politics\/poll-clear-majority-of-greenlanders-reject-independence-now\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">while only five per cent favour a statement to Global News provided by his office, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Landry\u2019s visit had only \u201creinforced our position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe position in Greenland has not changed,\u201d Nielsen said. \u201cThe government and the people of Greenland has no desire to be part of the USA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below media<\/a> after leaving Greenland that he would \u201ccontinue to work to deepen ties between our people\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffLandry\/status\/2057462143436431779\" rel=\"nofollow\">framed a future agreement between Greenland and the U.S.<\/a> as one of \u201ccooperation on security, economic development, and shared strategic interests in the Arctic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffLandry\/status\/2068691939269001280\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post on X<\/a> marking Greenland\u2019s National Day on June 21, Landry equated the holiday\u2019s \u201ccelebration of liberty and opportunity\u201d with America\u2019s upcoming 250th anniversary on July 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps America\u2019s 251st birthday can be celebrated with the addition of it\u2019s [sic] 51st state!\u201d he posted.<\/p>\n<p>Canada \u2014 which has faced its own \u201c51st state\u201d rhetoric \u2014 has found common cause with Greenland amid Trump\u2019s threats, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11655806\/greenland-canada-consulate-opens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opening a new consulate in the island\u2019s capital Nuuk in February.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In March while visiting Norway with European leaders, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will continue to \u201cstand with Denmark and
