The ministry said the purchase will expand the geographical coverage of Finland&#8217;s ground-based air defence network.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t &#13;<\/p>\n<p>The RBS 70 NG is the latest version of the ITO05M mobile surface-to-air missile system, which has been in service with the Finnish Defence Forces for more than two decades. According to the ministry, the upgraded system will improve Finland&#8217;s ability to counter both manned aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are developing Finland&#8217;s air defence system against a full range of threats. Safeguarding our preparedness requires appropriate and modern systems for each type of threat. This procurement is only one component of a larger package,&#8221; H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/valtioneuvosto.fi\/en\/-\/236553176\/minister-of-defence-antti-hakkanen-finland-s-ground-based-air-defence-will-have-stronger-areal-coverage?languageId=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The procurement covers missile ammunition, training equipment and a maintenance system in addition to the launch systems. The ministry said the capability is scheduled to become fully operational before the end of the 2020s.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Training for regular personnel, conscripts and reservists will take place mainly at the Salpausselk\u00e4 Air Defence Battalion of the Karelia Brigade in Vekaranj\u00e4rvi, Kouvola.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The purchase forms part of Finland&#8217;s wider programme to modernise its air defence following its accession to NATO.
