Turkey\u2019s broadcasting watchdog has told media outlets to cover this week\u2019s NATO summit in Ankara from a \u201cnational security\u201d perspective and warned that their broadcasts are being monitored, raising fresh concerns over media pressure ahead of the high-profile gathering.<\/p>\n

According to Turkish Minute<\/a>, The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RT\u00dcK) issued the warning before the July 7-8 summit, which will bring leaders of NATO\u2019s 32 member states to the Turkish capital under heavy security, road closures and a citywide ban on demonstrations.<\/p>\n

In a statement posted on X, RT\u00dcK described the summit as an important international diplomatic event at which Turkey would display \u201cthe dignity of our state and the hospitality of our noble nation\u201d to the world.<\/p>\n

The council said broadcasters should take into account \u201cthe public interest and our national security perspective\u201d in news and discussion programs during the summit.<\/p>\n

It also said \u201call broadcast flows\u201d were being monitored by RT\u00dcK experts \u201cwith due care\u201d because of the importance of the summit.<\/p>\n

The wording is likely to deepen concerns that broadcasters are being warned against coverage that could cast the summit or the government\u2019s handling of it in a negative light.<\/p>\n

The warning comes as Turkey is already facing criticism over media access, detentions and sweeping restrictions imposed in Ankara before the summit.<\/p>\n

Several independent Turkish media outlets, including the T24 online newspaper, the Cumhuriyet daily, the ANKA news agency and S\u00f6zc\u00fc TV, were denied accreditation to cover the summit, sparking criticism from press organizations.<\/p>\n

NATO spokesperson Allison Hart\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0on June 25 that for summits and ministerial meetings held outside NATO headquarters, the alliance relies on assessments by the host country when deciding journalists\u2019 access to the meeting site.<\/p>\n

The pressure on the media has coincided with the detention of journalists ahead of the summit.<\/p>\n

Buse S\u00f6\u011f\u00fctl\u00fc, international news editor at T24, and Ceren Erdo\u011fdu, a journalist at OdaTV, were\u00a0detained<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday for reasons that were not immediately clear, according to their outlets. S\u00f6\u011f\u00fctl\u00fc\u2019s lawyer, Erman \u00d6zt\u00fcrk, told Agence France-Presse that the detention appeared to be linked to the NATO summit.<\/p>\n

Erol \u00d6ndero\u011flu, Turkey representative for Reporters Without Borders (RSF), condemned what he called \u201cindiscriminate, arbitrary and chaotic operations launched ahead of the NATO summit,\u201d saying they \u201cclearly threaten the reputation and safety of journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n

RT\u00dcK has long been criticized by opposition politicians and press freedom groups for imposing fines, program suspensions and temporary broadcast bans on critical and opposition-leaning television stations.<\/p>\n

The regulator says its penalties are based on violations of broadcasting rules, while critics say they are applied selectively and have become a tool to pressure broadcasters that criticize the government.<\/p>\n

In recent years the watchdog has repeatedly targeted channels such as Halk TV, TELE 1 and S\u00f6zc\u00fc TV, including during politically sensitive periods such as the crackdown that followed the arrest of \u0130stanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu in March 2025.<\/p>\n
