Orb\u00e1n lost April\u2019s election<\/a>, but he remains the leader of the Fidesz party. Fidesz MEPs are part of the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament, alongside those of France\u2019s National Rally, led by Jordan Bardella<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur election defeat does not change the historically decisive fact that, in Europe, the patriotic political parties\u2019 progress is continuing,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said, adding that the Patriots for Europe faction still has one representative in the European Council, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babi\u0161. \u201cI am convinced this progress could only be stopped if the leadership of the EU could present some success.\u201d<\/p>\n

EU leaders will be in Brussels for a summit on Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n left office in May, weeks after center-right opposition leader P\u00e9ter Magyar won Hungary\u2019s <\/a>national election<\/a> landslide, with his Tisza party gaining a two-thirds majority in parliament.<\/p>\n

Magyar has vowed to reset relations with Brussels, unblocking Ukraine\u2019s application for membership of the bloc and setting his sights on reclaiming up to \u20ac17 billion in funds<\/a> frozen by Brussels over breaches of the rule of law under his predecessor. Tisza has also moved to introduce an eight-year term limit for prime ministers, to be applied retroactively, which would block Orb\u00e1n from returning to office.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy about that decision,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said, playing down his prospects of running again for Hungary\u2019s top job. But he faces other potential headaches back home.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Ferenc P\u00e1l Bir\u00f3, the president of the Hungarian Integrity Authority, an anti-corruption watchdog, called for \u201chigh-level politicians\u201d to face prosecution for allegedly defrauding European taxpayers of billions<\/a> during the Orb\u00e1n era. Biro has since been charged with embezzlement by prosecutors<\/a>, allegations brought while the previous government was in office. He denies the charges.<\/p>\n

Asked by POLITICO whether he was concerned about the risk of prosecution on corruption charges, Orb\u00e1n rejected the idea that he or any of his ministers had pocketed taxpayers\u2019 money, saying: \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen things like that up until now.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Orb\u00e1n lost April\u2019s election, but he remains the leader of the Fidesz party.
