\nTrump \u200bsaid on Tuesday that Greenland \u200cshould be controlled by the
\nUnited \u200bStates, not Denmark, as \u2060NATO leaders gathered for a
\nsummit in Turkey.<\/p>\n
Trump’s assertions that the U.S. must \u200cacquire or control
\nGreenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, sparked \u200ctensions
\nbetween Washington and Copenhagen – both \u200cfounding \u2060NATO members –
\nand more broadly \u2060across Europe. The issue has since moved to a
\ndiplomatic track.<\/p>\n
“That should be controlled \u200bby the \u200cUnited States, not by
\nDenmark,” Trump told reporters during a meeting with Turkish
\nPresident Tayyip Erdogan.<\/p>\n
Trump said \u200cthe issue of control over \u200bGreenland had harmed
\nU.S. ties with NATO.<\/p>\n
“That’s what hurt \u2060my relationship with NATO, because
\nGreenland doesn’t help Denmark. Denmark doesn’t spend \u200cmoney to
\nreally help Greenland, but it’s an important part for the United
\nStates, and it’s surrounded by China ships and Russian ships,
\nand that’s not going \u200cto happen,” he said.<\/p>\n
“They wouldn’t go \u200balong with it, and with all the money we
\nspend \u2060to help them with Russia.”<\/p>\n
U.S. Secretary \u2060of State Rubio said in June that
\nconversations with Denmark \u200cand Greenland were continuing
\nmonthly.<\/p>\n
