{"id":124978,"date":"2026-07-08T07:19:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T07:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/124978\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T07:19:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T07:19:13","slug":"denmark-pm-vows-to-defend-greenland-after-trump-renews-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/124978\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark PM vows to defend Greenland after Trump renews threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birds fly over houses overshadowed by the mountain in Nuuk, Greenland, on March 10, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Florent Vergnes | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000268\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danish<\/a> Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday delivered a rebuke to President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/07\/trump-nato-summit-greenland-us-troops-europe.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">latest push<\/a> for U.S. control of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/21\/greenland-trump-denmark-timeline-of-diplomatic-tensions.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland<\/a>, saying the Scandinavian country is ready to defend &#8220;every inch&#8221; of its territory. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters on the second day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/06\/nato-trump-defense-spending-whitaker.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NATO summit<\/a> in Turkey&#8217;s capital Ankara, Denmark&#8217;s Frederiksen underscored the message that Greenland is not for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Her comments come shortly after the U.S. president renewed his threat to seek to acquire the self-governing Danish territory, suggesting that the U.S. could pull its troops out of Europe in response to the region&#8217;s continued pushback on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our position is clear as it has been all through. Greenland is, of course, not for sale,&#8221; Frederiksen said. &#8220;We hope that all, including all allies, will respect the Greenlandic people&#8217;s right for self-determination and we are a sovereign state, and we need everybody to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/108331860-17834895681783489566-47028529527-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Denmark will defend Greenland, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Asked by CNBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/stephen-sedgwick\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Sedgwick<\/a> whether Denmark was prepared to defend Greenland militarily in the event of an attack, Frederiksen replied: &#8220;We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8220;One of the reasons why we have built NATO many, many years ago is if anything happens to one of us, then everybody should stand up for each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, Trump said Europe&#8217;s refusal to go along with his expansionist desire is &#8220;what hurt my relationship with NATO.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Greenland &#8220;should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;And when they wouldn&#8217;t go along with it, and with all the money we spend to help them with Russia \u2014 we don&#8217;t have to spend any money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. president also suggested that the country could remove &#8220;all of our soldiers out of Europe,&#8221; before adding: &#8220;Because as you probably noticed, Europe&#8217;s a very different place than it was 20 years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Trump &#8216;absolutlely has a point&#8217; on Greenland issue<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s pursuit of Greenland became a major trans-Atlantic issue at the start of the year, sparked by the president&#8217;s repeated claims that the U.S. needed to acquire the island. Greenlandic lawmakers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/20\/trump-greenland-takeover-threats-tariffs-naaja-nathanielsen.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insisted<\/a> the island is not for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who had refused to rule out the use of military force to annex Greenland, abruptly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/21\/trump-tariffs-nato-greenland-davos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a>\u00a0in late January, however, that he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had formed a &#8220;framework of a future deal&#8221; with respect to the territory.<\/p>\n<p>A working group of representatives from the U.S., Denmark and Greenland have since been meeting to discuss next steps.<\/p>\n<p>Rutte said Wednesday that Trump &#8220;absolutely has a point&#8221; on preventing China and Russia from gaining access to the Arctic, referring to the U.S. president&#8217;s claim that Greenland is &#8220;surrounded&#8221; by Chinese and Russian ships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, it is crucial that, as an alliance, and this is what we agreed in Davos, work together to make sure that doesn&#8217;t happen, and also, when it comes to Denmark and Greenland itself, we have a good process in place,&#8221; Rutte said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Choose CNBC as your preferred source on Google and never miss a moment from the most trusted name in business news.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Birds fly over houses overshadowed by the mountain in Nuuk, Greenland, on March 10, 2026.
