Tehran has not directly claimed responsibility for the tanker incidents.

US Central Command said it launched strikes against more than 80 targets across southern Iran in response. According to CENTCOM, the targets included air defence systems, coastal radar sites, command facilities, anti-ship missile positions, drone launch sites and dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fast boats operating near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian media said most sites hit were civilian, reporting explosions in Sirik, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and Bushehr. Iranian officials said several people were injured, while local authorities also reported damage to commercial facilities.

Iran responded within hours.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched missiles and drones against 85 US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. Iranian forces also claimed to have carried out a drone strike against the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain and said they had shot down a US MQ-9 drone over southern Iran.

Authorities in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, and Kuwait, home to U.S. Army forces, activated air raid sirens as air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles and drones.

Kuwait later said it had destroyed two ballistic missiles and 13 drones without casualties. Officials reported temporary power outages following the attacks.

The renewed fighting marks the largest exchange of fire between the United States and Iran since the memorandum of understanding was signed on 17 June.

Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the alliance summit in Ankara, Trump said he no longer believed negotiations with Tehran were worthwhile.

“I think it’s over,” Trump told reporters.

“I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum.”

He added that negotiators including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were free to continue discussions but said, “I think they’re wasting their time.”

Trump accused Iran of repeatedly breaking commitments made under the agreement and insisted Tehran could not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Rutte backed the American military response.

“I think it was absolutely necessary because when you have a ceasefire and Iran is basically violating the ceasefire, I think it is totally crucial that the US forcefully react,” he told reporters before the NATO summit.

Iran rejected the US account.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of violating the memorandum through renewed military action, the restoration of sanctions on Iranian oil exports and continued Israeli operations in Lebanon.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry called the US military strikes a “flagrant violation” of a memorandum of understanding, warning that Iran’s armed forces will respond under the right to self-defense.

“The terrorist US army, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, with a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, committed military aggression against several monitoring and surveillance centers on Iran’s southern coast,” the ministry said in a statement.

“These aggressive attacks also constitute a flagrant violation of paragraph one of the memorandum of understanding on ending the war regarding the cessation of military operations,” it said.

Iranian parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Washington had committed “major violations” of the agreement by restoring sanctions, launching attacks inside Iran and interfering with Iranian arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials did not declare the agreement dead, despite Trump’s remarks.

The confrontation followed three attacks on commercial shipping within days.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker caught fire after being struck by an unidentified projectile near Oman.

The United States identified the vessel as the Marshall Islands-flagged Al Rekayyat. It also said the Saudi tanker Wedyan and the Liberian-flagged Cyprus Prosperity were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The UKMTO confirmed the incidents but did not identify the vessels. It reported no deaths or environmental damage.

Reuters reported separately that a Saudi tanker suffered missile damage while maritime tracking firms showed several other tankers reversing course rather than entering the Strait of Hormuz following the attacks. Reuters also reported that empty LNG carriers bound for Qatar changed course after maritime authorities raised the regional threat level.

At least four oil and gas tankers turned away from the Strait after the attacks and Brent crude climbed above $78 per barrel following Trump’s remarks.

The United States also reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil exports.

The Treasury Department revoked the temporary licence issued after the June agreement, ending a 60-day waiver that had allowed Iran to resume crude exports.

Iran says the decision breaches Article 10 of the memorandum, which linked sanctions relief to the reopening of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Washington maintains the sanctions were conditional on Iran complying with the agreement.

The disagreement over shipping routes remains central to the dispute.

Iran insists commercial traffic should follow a northern passage supervised by Tehran, whic was agreeed in the MoU, but the United States has encouraged vessels to use a southern corridor patrolled by the US Navy.

The original memorandum was intended to reduce tensions after months of conflict by reopening maritime traffic and beginning negotiations on broader security issues.

HT

The United States and Iran exchanged a new round of military strikes on Wednesday, pushing their ceasefire agreement…

[87
12966,4416,40153,184,158,41988,113,16756,18353,47319,74,18352,17961,30802
post-126095","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-helsinki","tag-bahrain","tag-ceasefire","tag-centcom","tag-donald-trump","tag-finland","tag-gulf-tensions","tag-helsinki","tag-iran-strikes","tag-kuwait","tag-mou","tag-nato","tag-oil-prices","tag-strait-of-hormuz","tag-us-iran
["GET
