Corriere della Sera reported that the suspects also disclosed the identities of Italian counterintelligence officers monitoring Russian activities. La Stampa, citing recordings obtained during the investigation, reported that one suspect passed “thousands” of pieces of information over a 12-year period.

A lawyer representing the former intelligence officer denied allegations of treason, arguing that his client had only collected information already available from public sources.

The decision to identify the expelled diplomats publicly is unusual. Governments often withhold the names of diplomats ordered to leave in espionage cases.

Following Italy’s announcement, investigative journalism outlet The Insider reported that both Gorbachev and Astakhov were officers of Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU. Citing leaked Russian databases, the publication said both men were registered at an address in Moscow that corresponds to the GRU headquarters.

The Insider also reported that Gorbachev, 47, had travelled repeatedly to Finland before his posting in Italy. The publication did not specify when those visits took place or how frequently he entered the country.

Italy’s investigation into the alleged espionage network began in May 2025 and focused on suspected attempts to obtain information relating to Italy’s defence sector and support for Ukraine.

Russia has condemned the expulsions. The Russian Foreign Ministry told state news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti that Moscow would issue “an appropriate response.”

Russia’s ambassador to Italy, Sergei Paramonov, accused the Italian government of attempting to reduce Russia’s influence in the country through the expulsion of embassy staff.

HT

Italy has ordered two Russian military attachés to leave the country after prosecutors linked them to an espionage…

[87
42482,3502,158,1362,113,3504,159,61898,61899,74,238,241
post-126991","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-helsinki","tag-antonio-tajani","tag-espionage","tag-finland","tag-gru","tag-helsinki","tag-intelligence","tag-italy","tag-ivan-gorbachev","tag-mikhail-astakhov","tag-nato","tag-russia","tag-ukraine
["GET
