Passengers aboard the Ryanair flight described a loud noise, like a \u201ctire bursting\u201d before decompression of the cabin and masks dropping from the ceiling, the news outlet reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were screams [\u2026] for a moment I thought someone had accidentally opened the emergency door,\u201d one woman told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2026\/0710\/1582735-world-ryanair\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RTE<\/a>. \u201cThe masks dropped, and there was a strong smell; the head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man was wearing his seatbelt and wasn\u2019t completely sucked out, according to RTE, and other passengers helped pull the man back inside the cabin. The terrifying incident occurred after a piece of debris detached from one of the Boeing 737-800\u2019s engines, a claim that has not been verified by the airline.<\/p>\n<p>The passenger is a tourist from Serbia who was traveling from Thessaloniki in Greece to Memmingen in Germany, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20260710-man-nearly-sucked-out-of-detached-window-on-ryanair-flight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France24<\/a>, and the incident occurred over North Macedonia. The man has not been publicly identified but is reportedly 61 years old and was hospitalized with friction burns, but has been described as in \u201cgood condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several videos and images have been posted to social media showing people wearing oxygen masks and a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rtl1025\/status\/2075588295937900887\" rel=\"nofollow\">broken airplane window<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2000784179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ryanair-window.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of a broken window on a Ryanair flight from July 10, 2026.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\"  \/>Screenshot of a broken window on a Ryanair flight from July 10, 2026. \u00a9 X \/ @RThessaloniki <\/p>\n<p>Ryanair flight FR1879 is operated by Malta Air on behalf of Ryanair, according to aviation news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/liveandletsfly.com\/ryanair-passenger-sucked-out-boeing-737-window\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Live and Let\u2019s Fly<\/a>. As the outlet notes, it\u2019s too early to say what caused the window to break, but if it was debris, that would be similar to a 2018 incident with Southwest Airlines flight 1380, where debris from an engine failure broke a window. In that incident, a flight from New York to Dallas, a 43-year-old passenger, <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/report-metal-fatigue-may-explain-catastrophic-737-engi-1825345316\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Riordan,<\/a> was partially sucked out of the window and died.<\/p>\n<p>Ryanair didn\u2019t immediately respond to Gizmodo\u2019s emailed questions on Friday, but told RTE that the flight, \u201creturned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window detached during the flight.\u201d The airline also said that the \u201caircraft landed normally and the passengers returned to the terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The airline told France24 that a replacement aircraft was able to take the passengers to their destination in Memmingen, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing has also not responded to questions about whether it\u2019s been in contact with the airline about this incident.
