Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go<\/a> <<<\/p>\nAfter his release, the statement said, Gregory filed a complaint about what the town described as the “circumstances of his arrest.” The complaint was referred to the Public Integrity Unit of the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the Police Standards and Training Council for independent review.<\/p>\n
In an exclusive interview with News 9, Gregory told News 9 he and his wife were at the annual Fourth of July carnival in Gorham on July 3 when he spotted a man who he says threatened to stab him roughly two months earlier.<\/p>\n
Gregory said he tried to get the attention of nearby police officers when the man started yelling at him. As the two moved toward the police department, Gregory said he went inside to report the man.<\/p>\n
That’s when Gregory said the chief confronted him while he tried to show he was not a threat.<\/p>\n
“I turned out my pockets and lifted my shirt up to show that I had nothing on me,” he said. “Not a weapon, not even car keys, and to show that I’m not the problem.”<\/p>\n
During the confrontation, Gregory said the chief grabbed his throat with one hand, placing four fingers on one side and a thumb on the other, and used his other arm to push Gregory against the wall.<\/p>\n
“I swore multiple times what I stated, ‘Stop choking me,'” Gregory said. “I had told one of the other officers to tell him to let me go.”<\/p>\n
He said other officers eventually intervened.<\/p>\n
“No one should be putting their hands on anyone,” Gregory said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a cop, a crossing guard, me or the next guy.”<\/p>\n
Gregory said the chief shouldn’t remain in his position and that the encounter should serve as a warning if he does.<\/p>\n
“It’s going to happen to someone else. It’s going to happen to you. It’s going to happen to my son. It’s going to happen to your son. It’s going to happen to your dad,” Gregory said. “Because if he’s going to do it to me, he’s going to do it to someone else.”<\/p>\n
Gregory said he was looking for a lawyer and planned to take legal action.<\/p>\n
In a written statement, Gorham Town Manager Joe Hemmings said Gregory’s complaint was referred for independent review and that it would be “inappropriate for the Town to comment on the specific allegations, discuss evidence, or reach conclusions before the investigative process has been completed.”<\/p>\n
In a separate statement, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office said it would “neither confirm nor deny any potential New Hampshire Department of Justice Public Integrity Unit matter,” citing privacy protections under state law.<\/p>\n
