The increase follows the introduction of a revised Corporate Governance Code recommendation requiring balanced gender representation by 30 June 2026.

Large listed companies recorded the highest share of female board members at 42 per cent, up two percentage points from a year earlier. The proportion reached 38 per cent in medium-sized companies and 33 per cent in small listed firms, both setting new records. Women also accounted for 46 per cent of new board appointments during the latest appointment cycle.

According to the Finland Chamber of Commerce, the figures show companies have largely responded to the updated governance recommendation through voluntary action rather than legal quotas.

Lead expert Ville Kajala said the latest results demonstrate a commitment to self-regulation across the corporate sector.

“The clear increase in the share of women shows listed companies’ commitment to self-regulation, as the statutory quota targets apply to only 34 listed companies,” Kajala said.

Alongside the revised Corporate Governance Code, amendments to Finland’s Limited Liability Companies Act introduced similar gender balance requirements for companies exceeding certain size thresholds. Companies that do not meet the recommendation or the statutory target must disclose the deviation and explain the reasons.

Despite the progress, the Chamber estimates that around 25 additional women would need to be appointed for every listed company in Finland to achieve balanced board representation.

Kajala said the remaining gap is concentrated mainly among smaller companies. Balanced representation has not yet been reached in almost one-third of small listed companies and around one in ten medium-sized firms.

He said board appointments continue to depend on a range of factors beyond gender, including experience, expertise and the combination of skills needed by individual companies.

The report also found differences in the composition of board committees.

Women now make up 39 per cent of committee members across listed companies, with the highest representation in audit committees, where they account for 46 per cent of members. More than half of audit committee chairs are women.

Representation remains lower in other areas. Women hold 36 per cent of seats on remuneration committees, while they account for only 25 per cent of nomination committee members.

The lowest share was recorded in shareholder nomination committees, which prepare proposals for board appointments in more than half of Finland’s listed companies. Women represent just 18 per cent of members in those bodies.

Kajala said the differences reflect the professional backgrounds of board members.

According to the report, female directors are more likely to have experience in finance, human resources or legal management, while male directors more often have backgrounds as chief executives or business unit leaders. Kajala said the share of women has nevertheless increased across all major committee types over the past year.

HT

Women now occupy a record 37 per cent of board positions in Finnish listed companies, according to a…

[87
62308,22933,158,62305,62306,113,62304,62307,62303
post-128066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-helsinki","tag-board-members","tag-corporate-governance","tag-finland","tag-finland-chamber-of-commerce","tag-gender-balance","tag-helsinki","tag-listed-companies","tag-ville-kajala","tag-women-on-boards
["GET
