{"id":129471,"date":"2026-07-14T20:30:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T20:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/129471\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T20:30:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T20:30:26","slug":"denmark-says-it-will-defend-every-inch-of-nato-as-trump-eyes-greenland-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/129471\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark Says It Will Defend \u2018Every Inch\u2019 of NATO as Trump Eyes Greenland Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark said on Wednesday that the country would defend \u201cevery inch\u201d of its territory and reiterated that Greenland was not for sale after President Trump again said that the United States should have control over the island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Ms. Frederiksen once again pushed back against the idea, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/08\/greenland-trump-nato-denmark.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">telling reporters<\/a> at the NATO summit in Turkey that Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, was not for sale. When asked how she would respond if the island were attacked, she said, \u201cWe will defend the kingdom of Denmark,\u201d adding, \u201cWe are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Mr. Trump on Wednesday expressed frustration with NATO over the issue. \u201cGreenland is a big problem for us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need it for protection of the world, not just the United States, and it\u2019s very important. It doesn\u2019t help Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In January, Mr. Trump suggested that he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/14\/us\/politics\/greenland-trump-denmark.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">could use military force<\/a> to take control of the island. In response, Denmark developed plans to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/20\/world\/europe\/denmark-blow-up-greenland-runways-us-invasion.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blow up airfields<\/a> in Greenland in the event of an American invasion, and Ms. Frederiksen <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/27\/world\/europe\/mette-frederiksen-greenland-us-ally.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">openly wondered<\/a> how long the United States would remain an ally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In recent months, Mr. Trump has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/23\/us\/politics\/trumps-greenland-power.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backed off<\/a> his most serious threats, with Washington turning to negotiations to press for more influence \u2014 including pushing Denmark for access to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/world\/europe\/us-military-seeks-expansion-in-greenland.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three more military bases<\/a> there, demanding <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/18\/world\/europe\/us-greenland-talks-trump.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effective veto power<\/a> over any major investment deals and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/21\/world\/europe\/greenland-protests-us-consulate.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opening a bigger consulate<\/a> in Nuuk, the island\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s proposals seem to have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/13\/us\/politics\/greenland-denmark-trump-frederiksen.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drawn Greenland closer to Denmark<\/a>, as they try to present a united front against the American advances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cWe are a sovereign state and we need everyone to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty,\u201d Ms. Frederiksen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cArticle 5 is our insurance,\u201d she added, referring to NATO\u2019s collective defense agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The European Union publicly backed Denmark and Greenland after Mr. Trump\u2019s outburst. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cDecisions about the future of Greenland are for Greenlanders and Danes to decide,\u201d Olof Gill, a spokesman for the European Commission, the executive arm of the bloc, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cTerritorial integrity, national sovereignty and inviolability of borders are fundamental principles of international law,\u201d he
