Infoerdve.lt, citing information from BNS, reports that Vilnius Development Company, a municipal company owned by Vilnius City Municipality, has signed a general contracting agreement worth 12.6 million euros, including VAT, for the reconstruction of Vilnius Vyturys Primary School at Taikos Street 189.<\/p>\n
The work will be carried out by KALVASTA Statyba. After the upgrade, the school\u2019s total area will more than double to 5,060 square metres, with space for almost 400 children. The reconstruction is planned to be completed in spring 2028, so pupils can return to the renewed building for the new school year.<\/p>\n
Vyturys Primary School was built in 1989 and is described as the first independent primary school of restored independent Lithuania. Over more than three decades, it has become part of the community in Justini\u0161k\u0117s, a densely populated residential district in Lithuania\u2019s capital, Vilnius.<\/p>\n
The existing premises no longer meet growing educational needs. The contract signed by Vilnius Development Company covers both the reworking of the current building and an expansion. Part of the old structure will be reconstructed, part will be demolished, and a new two-storey extension will be added.<\/p>\n

The reconstruction design was prepared by the architectural studio IN ACE. The renewed school will include additional classrooms, a sports hall and a multifunctional event space with an amphitheatre. The design aims to create a clearer school layout and bring more natural light into learning areas.<\/p>\n
A shelter meeting civil protection requirements is also planned in the basement. In Lithuania, such spaces are increasingly discussed in public building projects because they can serve safety needs during emergencies.<\/p>\n
The school grounds cover more than one hectare. Basketball, football and children\u2019s play areas will be installed, along with bicycle shelters, car parking spaces and pedestrian paths. The territory will also be reorganised and given additional greenery.<\/p>\n
The project will take place in a built-up part of Justini\u0161k\u0117s, so construction management will be one of the more sensitive parts of the work. The site borders residential buildings and an operating nursery-kindergarten.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not the construction of a new school, but the reconstruction and expansion of an operating educational institution in a densely populated part of the city. Such projects always require more planning, coordination and responsibility,\u201d said K\u0119stutis Taletas, commercial director of KALVASTA.<\/p>\n
According to him, special attention will be paid to work organisation, environmental protection, noise and pollution control, and safety. For nearby residents, the most practical issues during construction are likely to include traffic around the school, pedestrian movement, noise and child safety near the site.<\/p>\n
The Vyturys Primary School project is part of a broader package of school infrastructure improvements in Vilnius. Six schools in the capital are planned for substantial renewal over the next two years.<\/p>\n
This case is notable because it concerns an already operating primary school in an established residential area. In such neighbourhoods, school expansion can directly affect family routines by creating more opportunities for children to study closer to home and by adding sports, event and outdoor spaces for the community.<\/p>\n
The reconstruction is scheduled for completion in spring 2028. Pupils are expected to return for the new school year to a modernised, safer school adapted to community needs.<\/p>\n
