Isolated showers are possible in northern regions.

Conditions are expected to change during Saturday as the low-pressure system approaches from southern Scandinavia.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), showers will become more frequent from the west and south before turning into more persistent rain later in the day. By Saturday evening, rainfall is expected to cover much of western Finland, spreading eastwards overnight into Sunday.

Meteorologist Juha Jantunen of the FMI said the exact track of the weather system remains uncertain, although current forecasts indicate that rain will affect most of the country on Sunday.

“Locally, rainfall totals could exceed 50 millimetres in 24 hours,” Jantunen said.

Weather service Foreca said some forecast models suggest parts of western and central Finland could receive between 50 and 80 millimetres of rain over Saturday and Sunday combined. It noted that these totals represent one of the more severe forecast scenarios and remain subject to considerable uncertainty.

Foreca added that some locations could receive more than a month’s average rainfall within two days if the heaviest projections materialise.

Wind speeds are also expected to increase during the weekend.

The FMI said strong winds are likely over western sea areas on Sunday, with waves on the Bothnian Sea forecast to exceed four metres.

Foreca reported that storm-force gusts are possible over western coastal waters, while northerly wind gusts of 15 to 18 metres per second could affect parts of western and central Finland on land.

The change in weather will also bring a marked fall in temperatures.

Areas that have recorded heatwave conditions in recent days are expected to cool rapidly. In the regions stretching from Ostrobothnia to Koillismaa, daytime temperatures on Sunday could remain below 10°C in the heaviest rain, according to Foreca. That would represent a drop of more than 15 degrees compared with Friday in some places.

Elsewhere, most of the country is expected to see daytime temperatures around 15°C on Sunday, while southeastern Finland could remain closer to 20°C depending on cloud cover.

The low-pressure system is forecast to move eastwards on Monday, with rain lingering in eastern Finland and isolated showers remaining possible in northern Lapland.

HT

Finland’s spell of warm summer weather is expected to end this weekend as a low-pressure system moves in…

[87
158,5020,13633,2194,54437,113,37157,63493,52617,54440
post-130561","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-helsinki","tag-finland","tag-finland-weather","tag-finnish-meteorological-institute","tag-foreca","tag-heavy-rain","tag-helsinki","tag-strong-winds","tag-summer-storm","tag-temperatures","tag-weekend-forecast
["GET
